Mark Wahlberg’s Flight Risk Dethrones The Conjuring: Last Rites

Mark Wahlberg’s new action movie is surprisingly popular on streaming services. Despite not performing well in theaters, it has quickly climbed the streaming charts, much to the surprise of viewers.

According to Flix Patrol, the movie Flight Risk is now the most popular film on HBO Max in the United States, surpassing The Conjuring: Last Rites on both November 27th and 28th. Although it’s still early, Flight Risk doesn’t seem likely to be overtaken by other popular choices like Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, or Weapons anytime soon.

Mel Gibson directs Flight Risk, a thriller written by Jared Rosenberg, about a hitman who pretends to be a pilot to get close to his target: Winston, a mob accountant played by Topher Grace. Michelle Dockery co-stars as Deputy U.S. Marshal Madolyn Harris, responsible for flying Winston from Alaska to New York City safely.

In Flight Risk, Madolyn discovers Daryl’s deception and starts to unravel a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of the U.S. Marshal service. This leads to a thrilling and unpredictable adventure with plenty of twists and turns, though some of the surprises are fairly predictable.

Both critics and moviegoers reacted negatively to Flight Risk. The film earned only $48.7 million at the box office, despite costing $25 million to make – far less than most big-budget movies need to earn to become profitable. Reviews were also harsh, with Matt Hudson from Bloody Awesome Movie Podcast describing it as “convoluted, unexciting, and painfully mediocre.”

Currently, the movie Flight Risk has a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 129 reviews from critics. However, viewers seem to like it more, giving it a 62% score based on over 1,000 ratings.

What Filming Flight Risk Was Like for Star Michelle Dockery

Dockery remembers that filming many scenes for Flight Risk inside the small Cessna airplane was a real team effort. It took a lot of skilled people to make everything look so good and feel realistic. As an actor, she explained that they didn’t have much room to move—they mostly sat in just three chairs. Even the fight scenes had to be carefully planned and executed because of the limited space.

Flight Risk is currently available for streaming on HBO Max and Prime Video.
