Mark Wahlberg’s Family Film Hits #1 on Netflix
Streaming platforms offer a vast array of beloved films and shows, spanning various genres such as horror, science fiction, romantic comedies, and many more. With a mere click or search, you can easily enjoy a movie night right at home. These movies cater to different audiences – solo viewing, couple time, or family gatherings. The 2018 family comedy “Instant Family,” starring Mark Wahlberg, is one such film that’s perfect for quality time with your loved ones. It appears this film has struck a chord with many families as it currently tops the charts.
In this movie I’m talking about, I find myself playing a role alongside Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, Isabela Merced (from “The Last of Us”), Gustavo Escobar, Julianna Gamiz, Octavia Spencer, and Tig Notaro, among others. This moving tale chronicles the adventure of a couple, Pete and Ellie Wagner, who choose to take in three siblings. They’re part of a foster care network guided by social workers Karen (played by Spencer) and Sharon (Notaro). Initially, Lizzie (Merced) doesn’t seem like the child they want to adopt due to her age, but she makes an impression on them. As it turns out, Lizzie has two younger siblings, Juan (Escobar) and Lita (Gamiz), whom Pete and Ellie end up adopting as well. The couple’s life undergoes a transformation with the arrival of their new family members, bringing both joy and challenges.
As per reviews, the movie “Instant Family” effectively balances humor with the authentic depiction of adoption, showing the rollercoaster ride of becoming a family, with its highs and lows. Similar to Lizzie, the movie’s oldest rebellious character, children often yearn for their birth parents. Yet, there are instances when they must understand that their foster parents genuinely care for them, a lesson Lizzie learns over time. The film has garnered an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes and is drawing both new and seasoned viewers who anticipate laughter and a few emotional moments. MovieWeb’s Julian Roman commented…
The movie “Instant Family” is filled with genuine emotion. Director Sean Anders skillfully weaves a heartwarming tale about the challenges and immense joy that come with adopting older children, including teenagers. The film humorously sheds light on the intricacies of the foster care system. Many potential parents seek infants, often shying away from the perceived burden of raising “troubled” older kids. “Instant Family” is a tribute to those who choose to care for abandoned children, as it takes immense empathy and love to embark on this rewarding journey.
Mark Wahlberg Loved Working With the Child Actors on ‘Instant Family’
In a chat with FQ Magazine, Wahlberg shared insights from collaborating with the talented performers who played his on-screen adoptive kids – Isabela Merced, Gustavo Escobar, and Julianna Gamiz.
As a fellow film enthusiast, having collaborated with Isabela on a Transformers project, I was well-acquainted with her talents. In fact, when another major film opportunity came along, similar to our previous Transformers adventure, I strongly endorsed her. At the time, she was considering this new role that promised to display a different aspect of her versatility – humor, emotion, and everything in between. I encouraged her to embrace this chance to explore new dimensions of her acting prowess. Now, she’s currently filming Dora The Explorer down under, and with such a promising start, the possibilities for her career are endless!
Later on, regarding the other children in the film, it’s excellent choices for casting. Sheila Jaffe, our casting director, has been a part of most of our projects. Moreover, she was adopted herself. She has a connection with The Felix Organization and is well-acquainted with many individuals from the foster care system. Therefore, I had faith that she and Sean would get along well.
