Mark Ruffalo’s new crime drama series debuted in September 2025. He plays Tom Brandis, an FBI agent and former priest who heads a team investigating a string of armed robberies.
Originally debuting on HBO in November 2025, the series is currently gaining popularity again on streaming platforms. As of February 1st, Task ranks as the fifth most-watched show on HBO Max, according to FlixPatrol. Starring Mark Ruffalo alongside Martha Plimpton, Emilia Jones, Tom Pelphrey, and Fabien Frankel, it’s close behind The Last of Us in viewership on the platform.
The series has received widespread praise from both viewers and critics, earning a 96% approval rating from critics and a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Mark Ruffalo also received critical recognition, including a nomination at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, as well as nominations for Best Actor at the Golden Globe and Satellite Awards.
HBO has renewed Task for a second season, announcing the news in late November 2025. Francesca Orsi of HBO stated they recognized the show’s potential even before it premiered, and were thrilled to see audiences connect with it and grow its fanbase each week.
According to Orsi, Brad Ingelsby is a remarkably talented writer who expertly combines compelling characters and gripping storylines. They are confident his second season will be just as impactful and captivating as his previous work.
Ruffalo Will Return for Season 2
Mark Ruffalo will return as the main character, Tom Brandis, for the second season of the show. Brad Ingelsby, who created the series, is already planning the next season, and has previously shared some initial ideas for what’s in store for Ruffalo’s character.
Inglesby spoke highly of working with Mark Ruffalo, saying they had a great time together. He described Ruffalo as a fantastic presence on set and expressed his enthusiasm for future collaborations, hinting at many shared experiences and stories.
The first season of Task had eight episodes. HBO hasn’t announced a release date for Season 2 yet. You can currently watch Task on HBO Max.
