I was there when Hal started talking about getting a basketball hoop, and honestly, it fell a little flat. It seemed like a big deal to him, but one of his friends quickly pointed out that they already have a full basketball court – with two hoops, even – and a tennis net too. They actually have their basketball games right there, so Hal’s new hoop didn’t really impress anyone.
When Hal asks if he can join the team, he’s told they only accept Jewish players. There’s a slight possibility he might be allowed to join, though, since he’s half Jewish. He immediately rushes to tell his dad, admitting he wasn’t truthful with his friends – he pretended to be Jewish in order to fit in with the team.
The sixth episode, “Didn’t Even Hurt,” will debut on Mubi on Sunday, November 16th. It explores the father’s connection with his children in the past, and his current struggle to figure out his desires and what’s important to him.
The story jumps between the present, following Harper and Hal as young adults in their twenties, and flashbacks to their childhood. Interestingly, the actors, Reinhart and Raiff, portray both the adult and younger versions of their characters – specifically, as seven and nine-year-olds in the earlier scenes. Raiff explained this choice, saying that a significant event caused Hal and Harper to mature quickly, and he wanted to reflect that by having the adult actors embody their younger selves.
Hal & Harper Had a Stunning Reception
The film Hal & Harper first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, then became available on Stan in Australia. Now, MUBI is releasing Hal & Harper worldwide, starting with a two-episode launch from October 19th to November 30th.
Despite some initial reservations, the show has been very well-received. Critics and viewers largely agree, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 93% and 94% respectively. Reviewers have praised it as a heartfelt and realistic family dramedy with outstanding acting, noting its relatable and insightful moments.
Viewers are loving the emotional impact of the show, describing it as deeply moving and relatable. One reviewer highlighted how realistically the series portrayed both the characters’ feelings and their internal struggles. Although not every review is flawless, the acting is consistently praised as excellent.
The sixth episode of Hal & Harper will be available on November 16th, and new episodes will be released each Sunday, concluding with the series finale on November 30th.
