Mark Hamill Reveals the SHOCKING Difference Between Original Star Wars & Sequels!
Back in 1977, with precision, the initial Star Wars movie (later known as A New Hope) graced the big screen for the first time. It was a monumental success and paved the way for two subsequent movies, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, forming the original trilogy. Over time, the franchise expanded into what is now referred to as a trilogy of trilogies, encompassing both prequels and sequels that chronicle the Skywalker family saga. Luke Skywalker played a pivotal role in the storyline, but Mark Hamill, the man who brought him to life on screen, has acknowledged how the films evolved over time.
As a movie enthusiast, I recently watched an interview with Mark Hamill on TODAY, where he shared a vital lesson from the original Star Wars trilogy that seemed missing in the sequels. He recounted a heart-to-heart chat with George Lucas about Return of the Jedi and Luke Skywalker’s journey, expressing his desire to delve deeper into the dark side but was reminded by Lucas about our young audience. Hamill, known for speaking up about the franchise’s direction, especially concerning the sequel trilogy, admitted that this aspect was not given due consideration in the later movies.
Whenever I expressed concerns about the storyline – specifically mentioning Luke’s hand loss and his black glove hinting at him leaning towards the dark side in the third film – George Lucas responded, ‘It’s for kids.’ This attitude explained why he wouldn’t contemplate killing any of the main characters. In the newer films, they’re eliminating characters one by one.
It appears Hamill is discussing the deaths of Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and himself as Luke Skywalker in the movies The Force Awakens, The Rise of Skywalker, and The Last Jedi respectively, from a later timeline than the original trilogy. However, contrary to the finality of his onscreen death, Luke reappeared as a Force spirit in the third film of the sequel trilogy. More recently, a de-aged version of Luke was featured in The Mandalorian, but Mark Hamill has publicly stated that he won’t be taking up the role again.
Mark Hamill Has Ruled Out a Luke Skywalker Return
Lucasfilm currently has multiple Star Wars productions in progress, signaling a shift towards cinematic releases following a phase centered around streaming content. A significant goal for the corporation is translating The Mandalorian and Grogu from the small screen to the big one. This upcoming movie, jointly directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, is planned for release on May 22, 2026, marking the beginning of a new lineup of films featuring projects led by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Simon Kinberg, and Filoni, who is also working on Ahsoka Season 2.
For fans anticipating Hamill’s presence in Lucasfilm’s upcoming projects, it might be best to let go of that expectation as the actor has categorically denied any return to the Star Wars universe. In his own words, he feels it’s time for the franchise to move forward and focus on the new characters, leaving behind his iconic role. The next Star Wars film set to begin production is Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled five years after The Rise of Skywalker and features Ryan Gosling as the leading character.
