After nearly five decades of portraying iconic characters in the Star Wars saga, Mark Hamill has shared his favorite line from the entire franchise. Hamill first became known for playing Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars film, now called A New Hope, back in 1977. He continued in the role through many sequels and recent films, including The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.

During an interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant about The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, Mark Hamill discussed the most famous line from any character he’s played – the one fans repeat to him most often.

He revealed his favorite quote is, “I have a very bad feeling about this.” He likes it not only because Luke Skywalker says it in A New Hope, but also because some version of the line appears in every Star Wars film. You can see Mark Hamill’s reaction to this below.

You know, my absolute favorite part of all the Star Wars movies is that line, “I have a very bad feeling about this.” It’s just amazing how they worked it into every single film, always having a different character deliver it! It became this little inside joke, and I always get a kick out of hearing it.

Mark Hamill first spoke the iconic line as Luke Skywalker, while approaching the Death Star with the crew of the Millennium Falcon in A New Hope. Harrison Ford, as Han Solo, repeated it later while stuck in the Death Star’s trash compactor. The line became a running gag throughout the original trilogy, shared between Princess Leia and Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, and then by C-3PO and Han in Return of the Jedi.

The famous line continued to appear in the prequel films, spoken by Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) in The Phantom Menace (1999), Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) in Attack of the Clones (2002), and again by Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith (2005).

Han Solo says the famous line in The Force Awakens (2015), and Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) repeats it in The Rise of Skywalker (2019). However, the other Star Wars films made by Disney handle the line differently. In Rogue One (2016), K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) starts to say, “I’ve got a bad feeling,” but is interrupted before he can finish.

While many movies include the famous line, The Last Jedi cleverly weaves it into the film through BB-8’s beeps. Solo (2018) offers a fresh take as well, with a young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) happily declaring, “I’ve got a really good feeling about this.”

The famous quote isn’t just in the films—it’s also appeared in several Star Wars TV shows, including Droids (1985-1986), Ewoks (1985-1986), The Clone Wars (2008-2020), and Star Wars Rebels (2014-2018).

There are many memorable lines from Star Wars, but “I have a very bad feeling about this” is unique. It’s appeared throughout the series for almost 50 years, and that’s why Mark Hamill considers it his favorite.
