Mark Hamill on how Carrie Fisher’s death impacted his experience with Star Wars
As a Star Wars fan who has grown up with these iconic characters and their actors, I can’t help but feel a profound connection to Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. Their bond as siblings Luke and Leia transcends the silver screen, touching our hearts and making us feel like we were part of their family too.
There has always been something adorable and wholesome about the Star Wars actors behind siblings Luke and Leia. One could cite the teasing relationship seen in behind-the-scenes photos and footage, but Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher continued to refer to each other as family would. In one of the early responses to Fisher’s death on Twitter, reported by Time magazine, Hamill said, “I am grateful for the laughter, the wisdom, the kindness, and even the bratty self-indulgent crap my beloved space-twin gave me through the years.”
More recently, he took part in a discussion at Chicago’s Fan Expo on August 18, sharing some thoughts about how the loss he experienced in December 2016 affected his perspective on Star Wars.
It forever altered how I reacted to Star Wars in general… The heart was gone. I don’t talk about it because I don’t like reliving it.
At the “Mark Hamill Live” event, he got emotional while recounting the moment when his wife Marilyn shared some news with him. The New York Post reported his words about it, which were, “My wife entered our bedroom… She was crying, saying that Carrie had…” It was then that he found himself unable to continue speaking.
1. He has consistently shown great respect for his friend throughout the years, and during a speech in Chicago, he mentioned, “I found it naturally feminist to have the princess not be shy or timid.” This sentiment aligns with his statement to Variety on another occasion where he expressed, “I wasn’t expecting the person I met, who was incredibly wise beyond their years… They were extremely humorous, spontaneous, and clever.”
In a different phrasing, Hamill said to Chicago fans, “She was quite tenacious.” Indeed, what a spunky woman! Fans of the team can recall the sorrow from eight years ago and are thankful for this reminder of Fisher’s boldness, seen through her “brother’s” perspective.
