Mark Hamill gets emotional over death of Star Wars castmate Carrie Fisher and reveals how he feels about sci-fi franchise now
As a Star Wars fanatic, steeped in the galaxy far, far away for over four decades, I can honestly say that Mark Hamill’s emotional tribute to Carrie Fisher at Fan Expo Chicago was a poignant reminder of the magic we lost when she passed away. Seven years may have passed since her untimely demise, but the void left by Princess Leia remains as palpable as ever.
On Friday at the Fan Expo Chicago held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, Mark Hamill became visibly emotional as he paid tribute to his late Star Wars co-star Carrie Fisher.
As an ardent admirer, I found myself deeply moved by Mark Hamill’s heartfelt reflections during his recent live panel discussion. Seven long years have passed since Carrie Fisher left us too soon at the age of 60 following a tragic cardiac arrest in December 2016. Yet, her spirit continues to resonate strongly within our shared memory.
In simpler terms, Hamill (who played Luke Skywalker alongside the late Princess Leia) expressed that the Star Wars franchise felt less vibrant to him following her passing.
Hamill expressed that the spirit seemed to have departed from the Star Wars saga, as created by George Lucas, following Fisher’s demise.
Upon learning about Carrie Fisher’s passing, Hamill shared his feelings, revealing that his wife, Marilou York, had broken the news to him.
In simpler terms, Hamill said, “My wife entered our bedroom because she wakes up before me. At that moment, I was still asleep. She was crying and shared the news that Carrie…”
Hamill went on to say, “It completely changed my perspective on Star Wars as a whole. It felt like the essence had been removed. I avoid discussing it because it’s not a pleasant memory.”
Regarding the original 1977 film, Hamill honored his deceased co-star for embodying a ‘natural feminism’ within the series, as she bravely confronted Darth Vader and assertively led both Luke Skywalker and Han Solo (portrayed by Harrison Ford).
He mentioned that making the princess anything but shy or retiring could be seen as an unforced expression of feminism.
She showed no fear when confronting Darth Vader; instead, she stood up to him boldly, unafraid of his imposing presence.
In the movie, Hamill referenced a line where Princess Leia seemed to recognize Darth Vader by saying, “Your odor is one I thought I had detected before.”
Hamill said of the line, ‘I mean, wow! Pretty mouthy, huh?’
In the initial Star Wars movie, he shared an incident, exclaiming, “Rescuing her was more like making fools out of Luke and Han! ‘Here’s your gun!’ She retorted. Our heroic image was shattered, leaving us resembling a comedy duo.”
Hamill stated that he found it to be “unapologetic feminism” as it simply demonstrates that a woman possesses the same capabilities as any man, without needing to make an apology.
Previously, Hamill disclosed that his relationship with Fisher was challenging at times, yet they also held a unique bond between them.
He told Esquire: ‘We could be as loving and supportive as possible, then we could have big arguments and say, “Well, I never want to speak to you again,” and not speak for six months.
Each time you returned, it felt like no time had passed at all, as if we seamlessly continued from where we left off. There’s something unique about our bond.
On December 27, 2016, Fisher succumbed to complications four days following a heart attack she experienced during a flight from London to Los Angeles, at the age of 60, in Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles.
Medical experts determined that there were traces of cocaine, MDMA (ecstasy), and heroin in Fisher’s body when she unfortunately passed away.
Sadly, following the Hollywood calamity, Debbie Reynolds, famed star of Singin’ in the Rain, passed away at 84 on December 28, 2016, just a day after suffering a stroke, during preparations for her daughter Carrie Fisher’s memorial.
