In a statement released to The Times on Monday, the “We Belong Together” and “Fantasy” pop sensation expressed her heartache over losing her mother over the weekend. She also mentioned that in a heartbreaking coincidence, her elder sister passed away on the very same day.
She didn’t provide further information about the timing and location of the women’s deaths, nor the reasons behind them.
55-year-old five-time Grammy winner Mariah Carey expressed gratitude for having spent the last week with her mother, Patricia Carey, who is a former opera singer. Born on March 27, 1969, to Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey, Mariah’s parents divorced when she was just three years old.
In her 2020 memoir titled “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the artist openly discussed her intricate bond with her mother. At that time, she penned down, “Our relationship is like a thorny vine, entwined with feelings of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, envy, admiration, and frustration.”
Additionally, the vocalist penned songs that touched upon her personal experiences with her sister. She alleged her sister had given her Valium without consent, offered cocaine and cigarettes, and attempted to set her up with a pimp. Later on, she sought therapy, which assisted her in redefining and reinterpreting her family dynamics.
In her words, as reported by People, she referred to her mother as ‘Pat’, her former brother as ‘Morgan’ and her former sister as ‘Alison’. She came to realize that she needed to let go of hoping they would someday transform into the ideal mother, older brother, and older sister she had imagined.
On Monday, Mariah expressed her appreciation for “the warmth, understanding, and regard for my personal space during these challenging circumstances.”
