Mariah Carey’s inescapable ‘All I Want for Christmas’ adds new record to nice list
As a long-time fan of music and Christmas, I find myself utterly captivated by the extraordinary career and impact of Mariah Carey, particularly her iconic hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Growing up, I vividly remember the first time I heard this song; it was like a magical holiday anthem that instantly transported me to a cozy winter wonderland.
Mariah Carey, who calls herself “The Queen of Christmas,” added another achievement to her collection this year by setting two new records on the Billboard charts.
As a seasoned movie critic, let me share my enthusiasm over the timeless holiday classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by none other than Carey. This cheerful pop anthem has reclaimed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for an impressive seventeen weeks, setting a new streaming record in the process. The music outlet’s latest report confirms this milestone, further cementing its status as a holiday staple.

The vocalist and composer, known for a voice reminiscent of an Olympic athlete, discusses her new role as the self-proclaimed Monarch of Christmas.
According to Billboard’s report on Monday, the artist known for her hits “Fantasy” and “Emotions” has set a new record by holding the top spot on the multi-metric chart for longer than ever before. Her 1994 song has reached its highest position yet, extending her career lead on the chart, surpassing her previous 16-week stint at No. 1 in 1995 and 1996 with her collaboration with Boyz II Men, “One Sweet Day.
Carey expressed profound gratitude on her Instagram stories on Monday, commenting that she’ll never underestimate this incredible achievement (Billboard’s post about the longest Hot 100 reign) and wished everyone an early Merry Christmas!
For three weeks straight this holiday season, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has been at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking the third longest run in the chart’s 66-year history. This year, Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” holds the record with a 19-week run, and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus set the record in 2019 with a run of 20 weeks.
Billboard has shared that “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has broken a streaming record, holding the number one spot on the Streaming Songs chart for 21 weeks since its inception in 2013. The song has accumulated an impressive 48 million official U.S. streams within the week ending Dec. 19. Previously, “Old Town Road” held this record for 20 weeks starting from April 2019.

Mariah Carey, in a playful twist, acknowledges that engaging with her most dedicated fans via artificial intelligence on Spotify is more of a dream than reality – attributing it to creative exaggeration and perhaps less-than-ideal lighting conditions.
In 1994, Carey debuted her Guinness World Record-breaking single from her first holiday album titled “Merry Christmas.” This year marks its 30th anniversary since release. The song, penned as her inaugural Christmas composition, came early in her career. Initially, it quickly climbed the charts and has remained popular ever since, recurring annually during the holiday season. As a fast-paced love ballad set at Christmas time, it resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, according to a previous New York Times report, becoming ingrained in people’s minds like no other Christmas song in over half a century.
Carey explained to The Times in 2020 that it might seem like she was inventing things, but her Christmas song truly originated from a heartfelt desire to create something reminiscent of the holiday season. It wasn’t simply about adding sleigh bells to the track or discussing snow; instead, she aimed to do something unique. She wanted to recall everything that stirred up festive feelings within her. As a child, what were the Christmas experiences she longed for?
Over three decades, the globally renowned octave-leaping sensation – who’s already among the most accomplished recording artists ever – has kept evolving her hit single. She’s collaborated with artists like Justin Bieber in 2011, Michael Bublé during his Christmas special, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots for a toy instrument version, and James Corden for “Carpool Karaoke”. A children’s book and animated film have been produced based on the song, with Carey claiming her throne as the Christmas queen. Along the way, she’s hosted an annual holiday show or tour.

13-year-old Brenda Lee recorded the vocals for “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in a Nashville studio back in 1958, and this beloved holiday song remains as popular as ever today.
Previously, the 55-year-old musician shared with The Times that instead of her usual approach, she began composing this particular song by playing random notes on a piano – an unusual method for her.
She mentioned that she was quietly composing a tune, in a dimly lit house adorned with a Christmas tree, when suddenly the idea for this melody struck her. She teamed up with Walter Afanasieff, who has previously collaborated on hits like ‘Hero’ and ‘My All’, to work on both the melody and the bridge.
“We wanted it to feel classic. I didn’t want it to feel ’90s. It probably feels ’90s now to people who are nostalgic about the ’90s. But in the ’90s, it was something different… I wanted this to have a different feel. I wanted it to be, you know, timeless. And to feel festive. The background vocals are a really important part of the song. It was an incredible group of singers. I stacked my own vocals in there. We were having the best time in the studio. It sounds corny, but I think you can hear it on the record.”
And very much so in all the records it has set.
