Mariah Carey scores another victory in lawsuit over All I Want For Christmas Is You as judge orders opposition to pay massive penalty

Mariah Carey has won another legal battle regarding her popular song, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

In 2023, the 56-year-old singer faced a lawsuit from two songwriters who accused her of plagiarism, but the legal case was eventually dropped.

I was shocked to learn that Taylor Swift was being sued by Andy Stone and Troy Powers, the guys from Vince Vance & The Valiants! They claimed she basically copied their 1989 song – the same title and everything – and they were asking for a huge $20 million because of it. It was a really tough situation for everyone involved.

Although the lawsuit was dropped, the lawyers for the people who filed it are now dealing with a new problem.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the judge has ordered them to pay penalties to Carey.

The paperwork showed the five-time Grammy winner was awarded $92,303.20 in sanctions.

In addition to other penalties, the plaintiff’s legal team was ordered to pay several thousand dollars to the opposing parties, bringing the total amount they must pay to almost $110,000.

Stone and Powers originally filed a lawsuit against her claiming she copied one of their songs, seeking millions of dollars in damages. However, the judge dismissed the case in March.

The judge dismissed the case, finding it without valid grounds and stating it was important to discourage frivolous lawsuits, according to reports.

Stone and Powers had previously stated that their holiday song shared significant similarities with another in terms of lyrics, melody, and overall style.

After their song appeared on the Billboard charts during the 1993 holiday season, the artists claimed that Carey presented the songs as if she had created them herself, despite knowing they weren’t originally hers.

The Queen of Christmas released her famous song and her adjoining music video in 1994.

This case, which has now been dropped, was a second attempt to sue, following a similar lawsuit filed in 2022. Stone had previously sued Carey, alleging that her famous Christmas song infringed on copyright.

Mariah Carey recently won a legal battle, and this victory comes on the heels of another impressive achievement: she just completed her 100th week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This milestone is thanks to a total of 19 of her songs reaching the top spot throughout her career, according to Billboard and data from Luminate.

Mariah Carey’s debut album, released in 1990, included the song “Vision of Love,” which became her first number-one hit.

Besides her iconic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and her first hit, Mariah Carey has had numerous other chart-topping songs, including “Emotions” (1991), “Hero” (1993), “Always Be My Baby” (1996), “We Belong Together” (2005), and “Touch My Body” (2008), among many others.

Her popular Christmas song continued its incredible run, staying at the top of the charts for an amazing 21 weeks – a new record!

“All I Want for Christmas” reached a historic milestone, spending its 78th week on the Hot 100 chart – making it the longest-running hit on the list ever by a female artist.

She released the track as part of her holiday album Merry Christmas in November 1994.

Over the past decade, as streaming became popular, her song first reached the top 10 most-streamed list in 2017.

The song first hit the top five in December 2018 and has been a winter favorite every year since, including this year.
