As an ardent fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Maria Callas in the upcoming biopic. The prospect of witnessing such a transformative performance, especially considering the depth of emotion and artistry that opera demands, is truly captivating.

In the debut trailer, it’s Angelina Jolie who makes an appearance, portraying the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, aged 49.

The video begins by showing Maria, now elderly, stepping onto a stage where a man plays the piano. As Jolie’s portrayal of Maria looks around at the unoccupied chairs, her mind drifts back to her youthful days.

A brief sequence shows her appearing more youthful and beautiful. She’s also depicted aboard a yacht with Aristotle Onassis, their past love affair evident. Subsequently, she’s shown in Paris, experiencing emotional turmoil in a courtyard, and diligently working on improving her voice.

She is not heard singing, however.

The movie portrays the story of the American-Greek soprano, who, having led an extravagant and turbulent life under the spotlight, now resides in Paris for a fresh start. Our tale revisits the iconic soprano during her final days, as she grapples with her identity and reflects on her life.

She died in Paris in 1977 of a heart attack at age 53.

The much-awaited film is set to hit theaters in November, followed by its release for streaming on Netflix in December.

It is a massive undertaking for the star.

Speaking at a press conference for the movie at the Venice Film Festival, she said: ‘I was terribly nervous; I spent almost seven months training.

During my initial performance, I recall feeling incredibly anxious. My boys were present and kindly stood guard at the entrance to ensure no one else intruded, which only added to my jitters. I was trembling with anticipation.

In a gracious manner, director Pablo Larraín initially placed me in a modest setting and eventually brought me to La Scala, allowing me the chance to mature. I found it daunting to meet the expectations set by Callas.

In a playful manner, Angelina hinted that following the completion of the film, she might start attending karaoke nights regularly.

She jokingly replied when asked about her favorite karaoke song: “Since I hadn’t sung anything prior to this film, I haven’t tried karaoke. But now, perhaps I have a few songs up my sleeve!

Earlier this month, Jolie admitted that she once enjoyed singing, a passion she set aside following harsh criticism from an unidentified former partner about her vocal abilities.

Previously wed to Johnny Lee Miller, Billy Bob Thornton, and Brad Pitt, the actress confessed that portraying opera singer Maria proved difficult for her due to her apprehensions over exposing her singing talents in a public setting.

She shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the experience was otherworldly for her since she doesn’t typically sing. There was someone significant in her life who wasn’t supportive of her singing abilities, which stemmed from a difficult relationship. This made her believe she lacked singing talent.

It felt strange that the theater training I had didn’t seem to shield me, yet I found myself swaying to someone else’s viewpoint. Overcoming various obstacles was necessary before I could resume singing again.

Last week, she shared with IndieWire that she wasn’t overly acquainted with opera music prior to filming Maria.

The Oscar-winning actress confessed: ‘I grew up in America. In other countries, they understand how essential and important it is, and it’s much more a part of the culture, but not where I was raised [Los Angeles].

I met Maria before, yet our encounter marked the unveiling of a novel artistic genre for me. It not only entered my life, but also transformed it significantly, and went on to teach me an array of diverse operas.

I hope everyone, regardless of their connection with the movie, embarks on a journey of discovery, lets the emotions wash over them, and tries to express what they feel through song. If I can manage it…

Angelina recently revealed that she spent ‘months’ preparing to sing in Maria.

As an ardent admirer, let me share my excitement: At the Telluride Film Festival, I gleefully disclosed how I immersed myself in a rigorous seven-month journey of opera classes, learning from exceptional mentors. Adding to this musical education, I also took Italian lessons and was fortunate enough to have a dedicated team that provided me with unwavering support throughout this enriching experience.

In my younger days, specific tunes and sounds resonated with my emotions – they mirrored the feelings of falling in love, curiosity, or any experiences I was navigating at the time.

‘There is nothing that meets what you’re feeling like opera,’ added the movie star.

‘[Some pieces] are so beautiful, so full of hope and so full of yearning.

‘Opera is bigger. It is bigger than we allow ourselves to feel in every moment.’

Angelina, mother of Maddox (age 23), Pax (age 20), Zahara (age 19), Shiloh (age 18), and twins Knox and Vivienne (age 16) with Brad, has expressed gratitude towards her sons for comforting her as she tackled singing in the movie.
