Margot Robbie’s production company is making a movie based on the popular video game, The Sims. TopMob has learned that the film will be similar in style to successful movies like Barbie and The LEGO Movie, and will be directed by Kate Herron, who directed the first season of Loki.
A movie based on the popular video game The Sims is currently being made by Amazon MGM Studios, Electronic Arts, Vertigo Entertainment, and Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment. This new effort comes after a previous film adaptation was canceled in 2019 when Disney bought 20th Century Fox.
Not much has been revealed about the upcoming Sims movie since September 2024, when writer Jason Herron and his co-writer Briony Redman joined the project. Herron recently shared that the film is currently being written and that the team is very pleased with how it’s going.

We were fortunate enough to chat with Roy Lee, a producer of *The Sims*, while he was doing publicity for his latest film, *The Long Walk*.
Producer Lee explained that the upcoming *Sims* movie will be very different and original, similar to how fans questioned the *LEGO Movie* before it came out – a film he also worked on.
It’s hard to explain, as this project is completely new and different. People were skeptical about what a movie based on LEGOs could even be like, until they actually saw it, and that’s what we’re hoping for with this too.
Lee explained that the upcoming movie will have a similar feel to both *The Lego Movie* and *Barbie*, falling somewhere in between those two films. He compared it to *Barbie* specifically, suggesting a tone that’s playful and imaginative.
I’m working with Margot Robbie on a film that’s aiming for a similar vibe to both ‘The Lego Movie’ and the ‘Barbie’ brand. Actually, our goal is to create something tonally similar to a movie based on ‘The Sims’ game – a blend of those two worlds.
While Barbie and LEGO are well-established brands, that doesn’t necessarily mean a movie based on The Sims won’t be successful. Movies based on video games are becoming increasingly popular, and 2025’s *Minecraft Movie* is expected to be a major hit. *Five Nights at Freddy’s 2* is also planned, featuring five popular characters from the game.
First released in 2000, *The Sims* lets players create and control virtual lives, quickly becoming a huge part of popular culture with four main games so far. Having sold almost 200 million copies globally, it’s one of the most successful video game series of all time, so a movie adaptation is a natural next step.
The Sims Movie Status Report
Roy Lee’s comparison of the upcoming *Sims* movie to films like *Barbie* and *The LEGO Movie* is likely to generate more excitement among wider audiences. Similar to those films, many fans are wondering how the life-simulation game will work as a movie, but that uncertainty could lead to a surprisingly creative and original result.
Barbie dolls, LEGOs, and the Sims all have one thing in common: they spark imagination. These toys are only enjoyable when people create their own stories and possibilities, which are limitless. The Sims, in particular, allows for a lot of creative freedom that appeals to players around the globe.
Herron’s experience is also a great reason why she’s perfect for this project. Having worked on *Loki*, a popular and unconventional Marvel show, she’s proven she has the creative vision to make these new characters compelling.
She’s no stranger to adapting video games, having previously directed an episode of The Last of Us. While it might take a little while – and some announcements about who will star – for both gamers and movie fans to get enthusiastic about the The Sims movie, everything is set up for it to potentially be another surprisingly successful adaptation.
