Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Return Gets an Answer From James Gunn

James Gunn, a key figure at DC Studios, recently discussed Margot Robbie’s potential continuation as Harley Quinn in the DC Universe. Robbie has brought the character to life in three films: Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). Although Gunn was the writer and director for the last film, all these productions belong to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

According to a recent update from The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision, there have been discussions about Margot Robbie possibly reprising her role as Harley Quinn in the DC Universe. However, it is more likely than not that she will not continue playing this character.

In an interview with Variety in 2024, when asked about potentially retiring as Harley following Lady Gaga’s casting in the Joker: Folie à Deux, Robbie expressed that she had always envisioned Harley as a role that could be passed on to other actresses, similar to many iconic male characters, which was her dream for the character.

The actress also pointed out that Harley is a “lively” role capable of taking numerous paths. She went on to say, “If someone else takes control of her, it’s intriguing – ‘What new directions will they take her in?’ There’s an infinite number of possibilities.

It’s not certain if Robbie’s stance on the topic has shifted since that time. Currently, there’s no official confirmation from Gunn and colleagues at DCU about whether Robbie will reprise her role as Harley or if a new actor might be chosen instead.
