Over time, multiple movie versions of the book have emerged, but the one that stands out the most is probably the 1939 adaptation helmed by William Wyler. This film featured Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier in prominent roles.

The latest adaptation is a 2011 movie directed by Andrea Arnold, featuring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson in the lead roles.

Kaya was just 19 at the time.

People who love the book found it amusing that the choice was made to cast actors who seemed more suited for social media platforms, like Instagram, in a historical movie set during the 1800s.

Some raised doubts as to whether Director Emerald Fennell, aged 38 and also known for directing Saltburn, had in fact delved into the pages of Emily Brontë’s acclaimed novel.

Furthermore, controversy arose due to the portrayal of Heathcliff, a character typically depicted as having dark skin, being perceived as white. This was seen as a form of ‘whitewashing,’ sparking criticism and accusations of racism.

The novel presents Heathcliff, often regarded as one of the most intricate romantic characters in literature, as having dark hair, dark eyes, and a dark complexion, leading some readers to speculate that he might have Romani ancestry.
