Margot Robbie doesn’t know why people “hated” her 2022 flop
As a film enthusiast with a penchant for the golden age of Hollywood, I find myself utterly perplexed by the enigmatic case of “Babylon.” Having recently watched this visually stunning and star-studded masterpiece, I can’t help but wonder if the world has gone mad.
Margot Robbie has said she doesn’t know why people “hated” her 2022 box office flop Babylon.
Additionally featuring Brad Pitt and Diego Calva, Damien Chazelle’s movie titled “Babylon” narrates the journey of several individuals as they navigate their ascent and descent in the film industry during the 1920s, a time when Hollywood was shifting from silent films to sound technology.
Actress Robbie, famous for playing Barbie, portrays Nellie LaRoy, a charismatic movie star, in the film. She catches the eye of Manuel ‘Manny’ Torres (Calva), a Mexican migrant, whom she encounters at a wild Hollywood gathering.
As Nellie gains popularity following her role once held by Jane Thornton (Phoebe Tonkin), Manny forms a friendship with the enigmatic movie star, Jack Conrad (Pitt), as both navigate their way up in the Hollywood studio hierarchy.
Regardless of boasting an A-list cast and an extravagant concept, the movie only earned $63 million at the box office, which was significantly less than its estimated production cost of between $78 and $80 million.
It garnered five Golden Globe nominations and three Oscar nominations, however, it divided both critics and viewers.
On the “Talking Pictures” podcast, Robbie expressed her puzzlement as to why the movie “Babylon” didn’t fare well.
She expressed that she really enjoys it, yet finds herself puzzled by its negative reception as well. Despite her strong connection to the project and unwavering faith in it, she’s having trouble understanding why some people disliked it.
I find myself pondering if, in twenty years from now, people might ask, ‘Weren’t Babylon successful during its time?’ Just as it seems unbelievable when one discovers that The Shawshank Redemption was initially considered a flop, leaving you to wonder, ‘How could that be?’
The Wolf of Wall Street star spoke positively about working on the film, especially with La La Land Oscar winner Chazelle.
She continued: “Damien is so thorough. Do you know what I loved so much about working with him? I felt like no one had really put their foot to the floor with the gas, but he wanted that all the time. He wanted more always. Even when we were prepping.
In my efforts to determine the right accent for the character, I came up with fifty-one distinct accents. It felt like I was performing a solo play, experimenting with each option.
Initially, we were reminiscent of Boston, but let me show you a different persona, one that hails from Arkansas – this is how Nellie might sound.
In my creative spin, let me describe her as a unique blend – picture Nellie resembling both Snooki from Jersey Shore and Joe Pesci. As for myself, I’ll add a dash of Fran Drescher along with a touch of Snooki for good measure. This level of detail is what we aimed for. At one stage, I tallied up the various vocal expressions I used at that time, and it totaled an impressive 51.
Following Babylon, Robbie co-produced and starred in Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking Barbie.
In the upcoming year of 2025, she’ll make her appearance in the romantic comedy titled “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” directed by Kogonada, where she’ll share the screen with Colin Farrell.
