Louis Theroux recently shared his thoughts on monogamy, drawing from his 14 years of marriage to his wife, Nancy Strang.
The 55-year-old documentary filmmaker has three sons – Albert, 20, Frederick, 17, and Walter, 10 – with his wife, a TV director. Before that, he was married to writer Susanna Kleeman from 1998 to 2001.
I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz around a recent documentary exploring the impact of some pretty problematic male influencers. It’s brought back a really insightful conversation I had last year with Rylan Clark – we talked a lot about relationships, and honestly, it feels more relevant than ever right now. It’s interesting to revisit that discussion in light of everything that’s come out.
In the chat on his podcast Rylan, 37, asked Louis if he could ever be polyamorous.
He responded by questioning if he was capable, then explained he’s never been married and doesn’t intend to. He then shifted the conversation to the idea of monogamy, pointing out that marriage has existed for a very long time.
A few thousand years ago, people typically lived to around 45 years old, meaning marriages might last 20 or 30 years. Today, lifespans are much longer – often reaching 90, 100, or even 110 years.
Imagine being married for ninety years! Could you spend a lifetime with the same person? Would that feel like a fulfilling life?
It feels a little blunt to put things that way, but there’s definitely something special about it. Still, it feels strangely restrictive.
Wouldn’t it be great to look back on your life knowing you really gave everything a shot? That’s what I mean – experiencing all life has to offer.
Rylan then retorted: ‘I think I’ve ate a lot from the buffet.’
Louis asked if I was still hungry, pointing out there was plenty of food left on the buffet, and we both chuckled about it.
In 2024, Louis shared a personal story about his marriage to Nancy, describing the exact moment he first realized he loved her.
The filmmaker married Nancy in 2012. He recently shared on The Receipts Podcast that he was initially attracted to her smooth and graceful dancing.
She shared with Tolly and Audrey that a particularly memorable moment was seeing her dance to Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv” featuring Ashanti.
I’d gone on a few dates with her, but I’d never seen her dance. I always considered myself a decent dancer – I enjoyed it and thought I had good rhythm.
Seeing her dance was a revelation. I immediately recognized true talent – she moved with incredible grace and fluidity. Honestly, I felt intimidated; she was on a completely different level than me.
Host Tolly playfully remarked, “So smooth and graceful on the floor! They just don’t make players like you anymore, Louis.”
Louis shared that his wife, Nancy, had experienced two miscarriages before giving birth to their third child, a birth he described as very difficult.
He shared this sad news in his 2019 autobiography, Gotta Get Theroux This, where he looked back on his career and personal experiences.
Louis is generally a private person, but in his book, he openly discussed his love life, children, and the difficulties he faced in his previous marriage.
He wrote about the tragedy, blaming himself for the reckless decision to bring Nancy into the dangerous process of another round of human reproduction.
Reaching full term with her pregnancy was difficult, as she’d previously experienced two miscarriages. She remembers crying during a weekend trip to Yosemite…
I’ve faced tough times, but nothing quite prepared me for this. All the ways I usually express sympathy and navigate difficult social situations just felt…wrong. My usual toolkit of comforting words and gestures simply didn’t seem to fit the depth of the sadness, and honestly, I felt a little lost on how to respond.
Looking back, I realize I completely missed what Nancy was experiencing. It’s hard to admit, but her grief felt distant to me – almost theoretical. For her, though, those babies were undeniably, heartbreakingly real, and I just didn’t grasp the depth of her loss at the time.
