Manny Jacinto wasn’t surprised Top Gun: Maverick dialogue was cut out

As a huge fan of Manny Jacinto and his acting abilities, I was initially disappointed to hear that his role in “Top Gun: Maverick” was significantly reduced from what was filmed. However, after reflecting on his words during his interview with GQ, I have come to appreciate the perspective he brought to the experience.

Manny Jacinto openly shared that he anticipated the removal of his lines from “Top Gun: Maverick” ultimately.

In the 2022 action movie, the actor portrayed Lt. Billy ‘Fritz’ Avalone. This film centered around Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise), who went back to Top Gun academy to train a new batch of students for a perilous mission.

I filmed quite a few scenes for the movie, but when the final version came out, my part was drastically reduced to just a few seconds on screen. All of my lines were edited out, but during an interview with GQ, the actor Jacinto didn’t seem too shocked by it. He even mentioned that he wasn’t completely taken aback by the backlash over this decision.

He found it complimentary that there was some reaction, but not entirely unexpected. On set, there seemed to be a growing focus on other actors and less attention given to their scenes.

Luckily, the experience was outstanding despite some challenges – I got to witness a massive production in action, observe Tom Cruise at work up close, and even be involved in such a huge film franchise. It’s inspiring because ultimately, Tom Cruise is creating stories for himself.

As a person of Asian descent, I strongly believe that it is our responsibility to tell our own stories and create bigger representations in media and society. We cannot continue to wait for others to do it for us. Growing up, I often felt underrepresented and undervalued in the media I consumed. I longed to see characters that looked like me, who shared my experiences, and whose stories were given the same importance as those of other demographics.

I played a minor role in Jacinto’s part, but wow, “Top Gun: Maverick” really took off! This movie nabbed six nods at the Oscars and raked in an impressive $1.496 billion at the worldwide box office. It was a small part for me, but what a huge win for the film!

The film’s triumph paved the way for a sequel’s approval, with Cruise, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell slated to reprise their roles. Teller hinted, “I’m not exactly sure when I’ll be heading back… but I’ve got a feeling there’s a private jet waiting for me at some point in the future.”
