Mandalorian: Giancarlo Esposito had a special request to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Star Wars universe, I can confidently say that Moff Gideon, portrayed brilliantly by Giancarlo Esposito, has been an absolute game-changer in The Mandalorian. His enigmatic presence and impeccable acting have added layers to the series that would otherwise be missing.

Throughout the past three seasons, Moff Gideon has played the primary antagonist in The Mandalorian, making it challenging to envision how the narrative progresses without his presence.

As a dedicated gamer in this interstellar saga, I’ve been along for the ride since season one, and I’m proud to be part of such an enduring cast. Though I can’t predict what Mastermind Jon Favreau has up his sleeves for my character, Gideon, I’m eager to return and unravel whatever mysteries he’s prepared for us. At the LA Comic Con panel, I shared my personal journey in transforming into Moff Gideon – a role that holds just as much significance for me as it does for the fans.

As reported by People, Esposito disclosed the source of his inspiration for the role. It appears the actor drew inspiration from the work of Star Wars legends, such as the late James Earl Jones and Peter Cushing. He found Cushing’s portrayal of Grand Moff Tarkin “fascinating,” but it was Earl Jones’ iconic Darth Vader character that Esposito decided to emulate in creating his own character.

“I went back and looked at James Earl Jones because that was just inspiration to me, how he held himself, how he carried himself underneath that grand and very graceful costume. It took a long time for me to even start to think that I was kind of a modern-day Darth Vader.”

According to Esposito, Filoni and Favreau didn’t provide him with a clear direction for the character of Gideon, leaving it to him to conduct research and develop an idea. Yet, he did express a specific wish for the pair to portray Gideon in a particular way.

The one request I asked for was a cape, and that gave me the feeling that I had to walk a certain way and be a certain way…

In addition to his acting role, the actor mentioned that he would pretend to wield a broomstick in his home to imagine using the Darksaber as Moff Gideon, a significant part of his character in the first two seasons. Although Esposito is uncertain about returning as Moff Gideon and where any potential return might occur – whether in a Mandalorian movie or further down the line – he expressed hopefulness and shared that the idea for shaving his mustache came from him, reasoning that Gideon may have been clean-shaven due to spending time in prison.

“And then before I started shooting, Jon Favreau came down and he kind of looked at me and he scratched his head. He went, ‘No mustache?’ And I went ‘No! No mustache!’ And so it leaves it open with all of those clones that there’s a possibility that Moff Gideon is still hiding out somewhere, waiting to come back and take over.”

There’s not much information available on the characters ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, and details about the cast have been kept secret. If Gideon were to reappear, it should be done in a way that makes sense and he would need to pose a greater threat than he did in Season 3, since he and his clones were defeated quickly in the season finale. However, if he plays a significant role in assisting Grand Admiral Thrawn in the future, a comeback might not be so undesirable.
