Mama June reveals unique way she honors late daughter Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell after cancer death
As someone who has had my fair share of trials and tribulations, I can truly empathize with Mama June and her heart-wrenching journey through loss. The way she honors her late daughter Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell by carrying her ashes everywhere is a testament to the depth of their bond and her unwavering love. It’s an unusual practice, but it speaks volumes about the lengths Mama June will go to keep the memory of her beloved daughter alive.
Mama June shares a unique method she uses to remember and honor her late daughter, Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell, who tragically passed away due to cancer.
Last Monday marked the anniversary of Chickadee’s passing. Prior to that, she had bravely fought against a Stage 4 adrenal cancer known as adrenal carcinoma.
In the end, June gained full guardianship of Kaitlyn, Chickadee’s oldest child who is 12 years old, following a prolonged legal dispute.
As a lifestyle expert, I would rephrase these statements as follows: “Currently, I am doing my best to maintain Kaitlyn’s grandmother’s health and spirit, and ensuring she knows that she is deeply loved.
One method I use to keep Chickadee’s memory alive for me is carrying her ashes with us wherever we go, referring to the entire urn.
A 45-year-old individual stated: ‘Some may find it unusual, but what we’re discussing is the entire urn, not just the small baby urn.’ (Source: People)
In the month of June, there are three living daughters: Jessica Shannon, who is 28 years old, commonly known as ‘Chubbs’; Lauryn Efird, aged 24, also recognized as ‘Pumpkin’; and Alana Thompson, who turns 19 this year, affectionately called ‘Honey Boo Boo’.
At present, she’s wedded to Justin Stroud, who she encountered during her recovery process in 2021 after overcoming a struggle with crack cocaine addiction.
June explained, “We wear our jewelry containing her ashes, but when traveling by car, the large urn accompanies us. However, we don’t physically travel with her on an airplane. Instead, we symbolically carry her along in our jewelry. We don’t take the big urn on a plane.
When we’re up in the air, she’s not at home. Our usual routine is to keep her in the car instead. We park the car in a lot and she stays there for about a week. Flying with her isn’t an option because she might get taken away from us. That risk, we prefer not to take. She clarified this.
The chickadee is undoubtedly traveling with June in the vehicle, as her mother observed. “Anna was in the car when we drove to Colorado,” she might say, or “Since we visited Justin’s mom in Alabama last week, I guess you could say Anna came along.
June revealed that everyone visited Disney and she came along, mentioning that carrying Chickadee’s ashes was a small but significant aspect of the trip. She also explained that maintaining the group chat, keeping her music playing on Pumpkin’s Bluetooth car radio, were little things they did to keep her memory alive.
The heartbreaking last days of a chickadee battling cancer were documented on the family’s WEtv reality series, titled Mama June: Family Crisis.
Instead of showing cameras during her final moments, the program chose not to film her passing or funeral, demonstrating sensitivity towards the family’s sorrow.

Chickadee was accompanied by her spouse Eldridge Toney, as well as her daughters Kylee, who is nine years old from her past marriage with Michael Cardwell, and Kaitlyn, aged twelve, from a prior relationship.
Prior to her passing, Chickadee consented that her mother could adopt Kaitlyn – however, this year, June found herself embroiled in a legal dispute with Michael regarding guardianship, as he sought custody not only for Kaitlyn but also for his biological child, Kylee.
In a firm declaration, June asserted her intention to keep guardianship of Kaitlyn: “Anna proposed that Kaitlyn live with her biological kin. I am prepared to battle tooth and nail until I no longer have the strength left, so as to ensure that this arrangement becomes reality.
This September, a Georgia court awarded full custody of Kaitlyn to June, following a legal dispute with Michael.
