June Shannon, known as ‘Mama June,’ says it’s been almost a year since she received a cancer scare. This came roughly two years after the heartbreaking loss of her daughter, Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell, who also battled cancer.
Last April, I had a surprise hysterectomy,” shared 46-year-old McIntyre, Georgia native, on Page Six’s Virtual Reali-Tea podcast. “It was really frightening for me.”
Mama June described the medical steps she went through before having a hysterectomy.
‘I did have some fibroid cysts that went to separate cysts, and we had a little scare,’ Mama June said.
Reality star Mama June appeared with her daughters – Jessica ‘Chubbs’ Shannon, Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Efird, and Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson – to promote the eighth season of their We TV show, Mama June: From Not to Hot.
Mama June shared that her daughter, Chickadee, passed away on December 9, 2023, at the age of 29. Chickadee had been diagnosed with advanced adrenal cancer about ten months prior.
She explained that imagining herself in Anna’s situation, she feared it might be ovarian cancer.
Mama June shared that she’s still managing some health problems, but these are different from the ones she previously discussed.
Mama June said that ‘some days are a struggle for’ her, ‘but it’s nothing like’ battling cancer.
Pumpkin said that ‘some days are better than others’ as she continues to mourn her late sibling.
Pumpkin admitted that she occasionally finds herself watching old videos of Anna and the kids, especially when she’s scrolling through TikTok late at night.
The family shared that Warren Zeiders’ song, “Pretty Little Poison,” was played at Chickadee’s funeral and continues to evoke her memory whenever they hear it.
Mama June explained that a health problem related to menopause could significantly disrupt her daily life if it gets worse.
‘I tell people, “We know it’s not ever gonna kill me, but it could immobilize me,”‘ she said.
In December, on the two-year anniversary of her daughter Chickadee’s passing, Mama June shared her grief with fans on social media.
She described losing a child as the most difficult experience of her life, even more challenging than her struggles with drug addiction.
Mama June explained that she’s been trying to stay positive, but she wants people to know that just because she doesn’t publicly show her sadness doesn’t mean she’s not struggling. She admitted she’s often very emotional, even if she doesn’t let it show.
Following Chickadee’s death, Mama June shared on Instagram that she passed away peacefully with her family by her side. She had bravely battled a serious illness for ten months.
Mama June: From Not to Hot’s next season premieres on We TV on March 13.
