Sobbing and sewage might seem an odd combination — unless the subject is “Malcolm in the Middle.”
During the 2006 filming of the final episode of Fox’s funny family comedy, the actors worked together seamlessly. Remembering that day still makes Jane Kaczmarek, who played the practical mother Lois, smile.
Kaczmarek recently shared a funny story about her former co-star, Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey on the show. Apparently, Dewey didn’t want to graduate, so his character blew up the sewers! Kaczmarek described how the whole cast ended up completely covered in grime – they were a mess!
Watching the series finale felt like the perfect way to end things. I first discovered the show back in 2000, and it quickly became one of my favorites on Fox – it was hilarious! It ran for seven seasons, and I loved following Malcolm, a really stressed-out but brilliant teenager, and his incredibly quirky family. Even with all the crazy stuff that happened, the show always reminded me how much they loved each other, and that’s what really made it special.
Once filming wrapped and the fake grime was cleaned off, everyone became emotional, hugging and saying their goodbyes, Kaczmarek remembered.
After the show ended, the cast members each moved on to different things. Bryan Cranston famously transformed from the lovable but clueless Hal to the dangerous Walter White in “Breaking Bad.” Frankie Muniz, known for playing Malcolm, became a professional race car driver, and Kaczmarek dedicated herself to raising her three children. Despite their busy lives, they all remained friends and stayed in touch.

Twenty years after the original series ended, the hilarious world of “Malcolm in the Middle” is returning! The show’s original cast is reuniting for a four-episode revival called “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,” which will begin streaming on Hulu this Friday.
The latest storyline introduces Malcolm as a single dad to his teenage daughter, Leah (played by Keeley Karsten), and shows him using his computer skills to help local food banks. He’s been estranged from his family for over ten years, a decision he made to cope with personal struggles.
Hal and Lois are thrilled to be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, but their happiness is interrupted when they finally have a serious talk with Malcolm. They’re even more surprised to discover they have a granddaughter, leading to complete chaos.
Kaczmarek was thrilled to reunite with her old colleagues. She described their show as something truly special – a rare combination that led to huge success and was a wonderful experience. Being back with everyone felt fantastic.
When asked what she enjoyed most about the project, she immediately said, “Definitely dancing with Bryan – it’s always a good time!”
Linwood Boomer, the creator and writer of the original series, and his wife, Tracy Katsky Boomer, are also back for this new installment.
“It felt really strange,” Linwood shared in a recent interview. “I’ve stayed connected with my colleagues, but being back at work with them was a completely different experience.”
“It was really enjoyable,” Tracy said. “Someone described it as like a reunion with your favorite friends from summer camp.”
Unfortunately, Patrick Dempsey (Sullivan) won’t be at the reunion as he’s retired from acting and chose not to be involved. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will be playing the older version of his character, Dewey, instead.
According to Boomer, Bryan Cranston was the main driving force behind efforts to bring back ‘Malcolm in the Middle.’ He explained that Cranston approached him while still filming ‘Breaking Bad,’ and despite already having won numerous Emmy Awards, was actively trying to get a revival of the show off the ground.
Cranston confirmed that assertion in a separate interview.
Cranston, who is also a producer on the show, explained that he was the one constantly bringing up the idea of revisiting the series. He described himself as a persistent nudge to Linwood Boomer, the show’s creator, saying he’d been suggesting it every year and a half. He felt there were loose ends that needed tying up, especially with Malcolm going to college and Lois becoming pregnant, making a continuation worthwhile.
Kaczmarek described Cranston as persistent, saying he repeatedly expressed a desire to work together again. Kaczmarek jokingly responded that Cranston probably just missed playing the lighter, more enjoyable role of Hal and was tired of the darker material in ‘Breaking Bad’. Ultimately, Cranston just wanted to recapture that fun feeling.
Boomer was hesitant, explaining they’d already filmed 151 episodes and felt the story had run its course. Then Tracy suggested a new angle: what if Malcolm had a daughter who mirrored his own personality and impulsive behavior? Boomer thought that would be terrible – Malcolm would be forced to confront his own flaws through his daughter, realizing he’d played a part in shaping her.
Hal and Lois are facing challenges of their own, dealing with Malcolm’s emotions and a surprising revelation: they’ve become grandparents.
NASCAR driver Jimmie Muniz recently shared his excitement about reuniting with his former television co-stars in a video interview. He especially expressed joy about working with Jane Kaczmarek, saying it felt like reconnecting with his mother after many years.
In the early days of the show, actors Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston received a lot of attention, with Kaczmarek and Cranston being highlighted in many articles and interviews. However, Kaczmarek found that the public focused more on her and Cranston than on Bryan Cranston, which she admitted made her feel uneasy, especially because she considered Bryan Cranston to be the emotional center of “Malcolm.”
I’ll never forget how gracious Bryan Cranston was when his big break came. Even though it meant a huge opportunity for him, he was genuinely thrilled for Jane, the actress who played his wife on “Malcolm in the Middle.” He told me in an interview years ago that seeing her succeed made him incredibly happy, and he was just overjoyed for Frankie Muniz too. It was so refreshing to see someone so talented and humble.
Before starring in “Malcolm,” actress Kaczmarek had a long career on television, with roles in shows like “Hill Street Blues,” “Frasier,” “The Paper Chase,” and “Cybill.” She also appeared in several films, including “Falling in Love” where she played Robert De Niro’s wife, as well as “D.O.A.,” “Pleasantville,” and “The Chamber.”
Playing the stern but fair Lois cemented her place among iconic TV mothers like June Lockhart from “Lassie” and “Lost in Space,” Barbara Billingsley from “Leave It to Beaver,” Phylicia Rashad from “The Cosby Show,” and Roseanne Barr from “Roseanne.”
Her powerful and unforgettable performance as Lois became a standout moment in her career. She explained, “The children on the show really had to be smart to outwit the very observant Lois.”
You know, that character always felt really special to me, and honestly, so did the way she approached parenting. I made a point of only doing things on the show that I genuinely would do as a mom in real life. I always believed ‘no’ is a perfectly acceptable answer, and I wish more parents would feel empowered to say it! ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ definitely showed a chaotic family, but underneath all that, they really functioned. They always made time to eat dinner together, which I thought was a beautiful thing.
Once the show finished, she knew what she wanted to focus on: her family. She had three children during the show’s run and wanted to spend more time with them. She relocated to Pasadena and dedicated herself to local community service and charitable organizations.
She always wanted a family and children, and she felt she was missing out on that while married to Bradley Whitford, who was a star on ‘The West Wing’.
They were happily married for many years, but their priorities eventually changed. They officially divorced in 2010 after being together for seventeen years.
With her children now grown, Kaczmarek has started a new chapter in her life. She recently married her high school sweetheart, whom she reconnected with at their 50-year class reunion.
At 70 years old, she’s deeply in love with her husband who lives in Wisconsin. She divides her time between their two locations, as he prefers Wisconsin and she enjoys it there too. She wants to spend time with him, pursue her hobbies like reading and watching Green Bay Packers games, and be close to her family. She’s feeling happy and fulfilled with her life.
Occasionally, people come across articles wondering what Jane Kaczmarek is up to now.
She has a quick answer: “I had a life.”
