Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name Sets Release Date for New Streaming Download Home

It’s surprising to realize that Makoto Shinkai’s hugely popular film is almost a decade old, and the director is close to revealing what he’s working on next.

Released in Japan in 2016, *Your Name* wasn’t director Makoto Shinkai’s first film, but it quickly became his most popular. Its beautiful animation, story contrasting rural and city life, and unique perspective through two teenagers who switch bodies all contributed to the film’s and Shinkai’s international success. Now, GKIDS is releasing a digital version of the film for purchase in UHD, SD, and HD, with pre-orders available now before its October 13th release.

Your Name’s Makoto Shinkai Poised to Reveal Brand-New Project Created ‘From Scratch’

Makoto Shinkai’s films have consistently received high praise since the huge success of *Your Name*. His subsequent movies, *Weathering With You* (2019) and *Suzume* (2022), were also critically acclaimed. Shinkai recently shared that he’s developing a new project, and plans to announce details in 2025 on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

While many remember *Your Name* for its body-swap storyline – where Taki and Mitsuha switch lives and communicate through phones and even by drawing on each other – the film is also known for its incredible music by the band RADWIMPS, who went on to work with the director on future projects. The film’s detailed and realistic portrayal of both Tokyo and the fictional town of Itomori (inspired by the real city of Hida in Gifu Prefecture) also sparked a surge in fans visiting these locations in real life, mirroring scenes from the movie.

I just saw that the latest GKIDS film is up for pre-order now and will officially be released on October 13th. It looks like you’ll be able to get it in a few different qualities – UHD, HD, and standard definition.
