Major Video Game Movie Could Join ‘Mario Cinematic Universe’

Rumors are starting to spread about a possible new movie based on a popular video game series. It seems like this franchise could become part of a larger, connected universe of films built around a well-known gaming brand. While we don’t have many specifics yet, people are paying close attention to this development and what it might mean.

Universal likely to be securing rights to a Metroid movie

A source known as MyTimeToShineHello (MTTSH) claims Universal Pictures is working to obtain the rights to make a Metroid movie, with the intention of connecting it to their developing shared universe based on the Super Mario franchise. MTTSH shared this information on X (formerly Twitter) on November 28, 2025.

This is the first time developers have tried to connect the world of Metroid to the broader cinematic universe Nintendo is building in almost twenty years.

In the early 2000s, Lion Rock Productions started working on a Metroid movie with director John Woo and several producers involved. The film would have told the story of Samus Aran’s first encounters with the Metroids and her battles against Mother Brain. However, the project was canceled in 2007 due to creative differences. Producer Brad Foxhoven explained that Nintendo wasn’t comfortable letting an external studio create Samus’s origin story.

Several people have publicly talked about wanting to make a Metroid movie or TV show. Actress Ronda Rousey has said she’d love to play the main character, Samus Aran. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts also has a Metroid movie idea, but he believes it’s too unconventional to be approved.

Brie Larson has said she’d love to star in a Metroid movie, tweeting that she wants to make one. She’s joined by actors like Seth Rogen, Chris Pratt, and Charlie Day, who are also enthusiastic about seeing a Metroid film as part of a potential Nintendo movie universe. Director Neill Blomkamp indicated in April 2023 that he would be interested in directing a Metroid movie.
