The launch of the service, combined with people staying home during the pandemic, greatly increased viewership of Disney-owned content, including a surge in Star Wars TV shows. Before this, new Star Wars shows were relatively rare.
Despite some challenges along the way, with the studio now focusing on releasing films in theaters again, it’s obvious that fans still enjoy watching Star Wars stories on TV. And now, we’ve learned that one particular series will continue for the near future.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord officially renewed for season 2
Great news for Star Wars fans! Disney has confirmed that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will be back for a second season. This is exciting because the first season hasn’t even launched yet, showing how much confidence Disney has in the show.
Dave Filoni, the creator and executive producer of the series – and now also the head of Lucasfilm – announced that the story of Maul’s quest for revenge will continue. Fans are incredibly excited about this news.
This is a significant win for fans. It essentially guarantees Darth Maul will have a lasting presence in the Star Wars universe, not just a quick cameo. Originally, George Lucas intended Maul to be the main villain of the sequel trilogy, but Disney went in a different direction. However, Maul has continued to appear in animated series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and this recent development suggests he’ll continue to be a recurring character.
The spotlight now shifts to the villain as Darth Maul seeks revenge on the Empire. The six-part series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, follows his journey to the galaxy’s hidden places where he’s building an alliance. But the Empire’s Inquisitors are hunting him, and along the way, he encounters a young Jedi who could become his new apprentice.
A particularly encouraging part of this news is that Andor is the first Star Wars series in a while to be renewed by Disney Plus. Recent underperforming shows have led to questions about the future of the franchise, and sparked debate about whether Star Wars should focus on theatrical releases again instead of streaming on Disney Plus.
Several Star Wars shows have faced uncertainty: The Book of Boba Fett and The Acolyte were cancelled, and the future of Skeleton Crew is still unknown. Surprisingly, The Mandalorian – the most successful Star Wars series on Disney+ – won’t be continuing as a show. Instead, Lucasfilm is making a movie called The Mandalorian and Grogu. This leaves Ahsoka as the only remaining live-action series, with its second season expected later this year.
Even if Ahsoka Tano’s story ends after season 2 of Ahsoka, Lucasfilm is definitely planning more Star Wars content for Disney Plus. The renewal of Maul suggests future shows might be animated, but given how good previous Star Wars animated series have been, that’s perfectly acceptable.
The new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, starts streaming on Disney Plus this Monday, April 6th, with the first two episodes available immediately. The remaining four episodes will be released each Monday for the next month, finishing the first season. Plus, a second season is already planned, so Darth Maul’s story will continue!
