I can’t believe it! Another one?! It’s absolutely devastating – another huge Aussie festival, practically SOLD OUT at 90%, just… cancelled! Seriously, it feels like the music scene is falling apart around us. I was SO ready for this one, and now… ugh, it’s just awful.
The Birdsville Big Red Bash, originally planned for July 7-9, has been cancelled for the second year in a row, organizers announced on Friday.
The festival grounds, situated 35 kilometers west of Birdsville in the Simpson Desert, were underwater for several months due to flooding.
After trying to find a new location for the 2026 festival and discovering that most ticket holders wanted refunds, organizers decided to cancel the event.
Festival founder Greg Donovan announced that moving the Birdsville Big Red Bash in 2026 isn’t possible, after looking at all the options.
Cancelling this year’s event was a tough decision, but we believe it’s the right thing to do for everyone involved.
He went on to say that nature is the ultimate power, and this year, its message has been clear.
We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who bought tickets to this year’s Bash, and we’re truly sorry to disappoint those who were looking forward to it.
‘We were so looking forward to another fantastic year with a great line-up of Australian artists.’
This popular music festival has been held annually since 2016, with interruptions only in 2020 and a planned break in 2025. It consistently draws large crowds of music lovers.
The music festival featured a fantastic group of Australian artists this year, with performances by Jessica Mauboy, Shannon Noll, The Living End, Missy Higgins, and Hoodoo Gurus.
If you have a ticket, you can choose to get a full refund, move your ticket to the 2027 Big Red Bash, or to the 2026 Mundi Mundi Bash, which takes place August 22nd to 26th.
This news follows the recent cancellation of the well-known Bluesfest music festival in Byron Bay.
The popular event, which started in 1990, was scheduled for the Easter long weekend. Headlining the event was the legendary New Zealand band Split Enz, reuniting to perform in Australia for the first time in 20 years.
As a long-time observer of the festival scene, I was really saddened to hear that Byron Bay Bluesfest, after an incredible 36 years as Australia’s most celebrated music festival, won’t be happening in 2026. The organizers just announced the tough decision, and it’s a real loss for music lovers.
As a long-time observer of the festival scene, I have to say this news is truly heartbreaking. It’s not just about the event itself, but the ripple effect it has on so many people – the incredibly talented artists who showcase their work, the dedicated staff and partners who pour their hearts into making it happen, our valued vendors, and of course, the loyal fans who’ve supported Bluesfest and made it so special for over thirty years. It’s a real loss for everyone involved.
Bluesfest has been a key part of the Australian music scene for over thirty years, and it significantly boosts the local economy by attracting visitors.
The festival brought in roughly $65 million in tourism spending to Byron Bay in 2025, $130 million for the broader Northern Rivers area, and a total of about $230 million in economic activity statewide across New South Wales, according to the statement.
The festival has boosted local businesses, including those in tourism, hospitality, and the creative arts, as well as their suppliers.
Increasing costs for things like production, transportation, insurance, and touring, along with lower-than-expected ticket sales and global instability, mean the festival can’t happen in 2026.
Bluesfest Byron Bay has appointed a liquidator to handle all financial issues, such as payments to suppliers and partners.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m hearing from several reliable sources that this year’s festival has unfortunately been cancelled. It seems ticket sales just weren’t strong enough to make it happen, and the organizers had to make the tough call. It’s a real bummer, but hopefully it will be back next year!
