Carol Morley’s mystery drama, The Falling, which features Maisie Williams and introduces Florence Pugh, is now available to stream again on Prime Video.
I first saw this movie back in 2014, and it really stuck with me. It’s set in a boarding school for girls in England, back in 1969, and it’s all about the intense friendship between two students, Lydia and Abbie. Things take a dark turn when something terrible happens, and then a really weird outbreak of fainting starts spreading through the school, and it starts to feel like everyone’s losing it – including Lydia herself.
The film features a talented ensemble cast including Florence Pugh, Williams, Maxine Peake, Monica Dolan, Greta Scacchi, Mathew Baynton, Joe Cole, Morfydd Clark, and Lauren McCrostie.

Maisie Williams won a London Film Critics’ Circle award for her performance in the 2015 film, The Falling, which critics generally praised. It currently has a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. According to The Guardian, the film is “terrific filmmaking – enough to bring a rush of blood to the head.”
I was so intrigued by the buzz around this show! The Times described it as atmospheric, insightful, and surprisingly funny, which immediately grabbed my attention. Then, The Mail on Sunday said if you’re into strange, dark stuff and don’t mind being left with more questions than answers, it’s totally worth checking out. Sounds right up my alley!

Variety described the film as a flawed yet captivating look at how psychological states can spread, and praised it as a promising step forward in narrative filmmaking for director Carol Morley, known for her documentaries.

Speaking with Time Out in 2014, Williams revealed why she was so drawn to Morley’s indie thriller.
Playing Lydia was a completely new experience for me. It’s funny, people still strongly associate me with Game of Thrones, so they often assume I spend all my time fighting with swords, getting dirty and covered in blood, explained the actor.
I really appreciated Carol giving me a chance to show I’m capable of more than just action roles or playing angsty teens. It’s tough finding good parts when you’re 17, and I don’t get much dialogue to work with on Game of Thrones.
The Falling is available to stream on Prime Video.
