The 1992 anime Sailor Moon is considered the most iconic magical girl series, and now Studio Pierrot is creating a new installment in the genre. Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly, scheduled for release in Spring 2026, will be the sixth series in Pierrot’s magical girl lineup. It promises to deliver all the classic magical girl elements with a fresh, high-stakes twist.
Studio Pierrot is revisiting its magical girl roots with a new anime project, marking the first installment in nearly thirty years since Fancy Lala, the Magic Stage. The Pierrot Magical Girl Series began in 1983 with Magical Angel Creamy Mami, and after five seasons, the franchise went on hiatus. It remained paused until the recent announcement of Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly. Like previous Pierrot series, this new anime features young protagonists who transform into older forms. However, unlike the well-known transformations in Sailor Moon, this series adds a darker element to the source of their powers.
Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly Is the Next Big Magical Girl Anime of 2026
The Magical Girl Series centers around sisters Fuu and Rui Nonoyama, who come from a magical world. They were once very close, but have drifted apart. However, a surprising event and a meeting with two cat-like creatures bring them together again. They gain magical abilities that let them transform and pursue careers as pop stars, all while keeping their powers a secret.
The anime Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly starts as a realistic story about two sisters growing distant while focusing on school. It quickly turns into a fantastical adventure involving aliens and magical powers. When Fuu spots a spaceship orbiting Earth – and no one else seems to notice – she receives a locket that lets her transform into an older, disguised version of herself. This allows her to secretly become a popular singer and perform for huge audiences.
Shortly after, Rui receives a similar magical transformation and becomes a pop star. Although the sisters don’t know about each other’s powers, they both end up pursuing similar careers. Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly isn’t just about magic; it’s a story about the complicated relationship between sisters and how easily it can become strained. Their newfound abilities unexpectedly bring the two sisters closer together through a series of strange events.
Many viewers have noticed similarities between Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly and the 1983 anime Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel. Both shows share a common plot point: the main character(s) see a spaceship, meet magical cat-like creatures, and gain the ability to transform into an older self. However, Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly focuses on two sisters as the leads, and their reasons for wanting to sing differ from those in Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel.
Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly’s Big Plot Twist Is a Dark Spin on a Classic Magical Girl Trope
Like many magical girl stories, Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly features characters who transform and gain special powers. While Rui and Fuu are schoolgirls, their transformation turns them into teenaged performers who can sing and enthrall crowds. However, this show sets itself apart with a darker twist: the transformation process itself puts a significant strain on the two main characters.
Fuu and Rui have two main rules to follow while using their transformation powers. First, they must keep their abilities a secret from everyone except the two cat-like companions who travel with them. This also means they can’t share their transformation experiences with each other. This secrecy is designed to create interesting challenges and ultimately strengthen the bond between the sisters, despite the distance already established in their relationship.
The second key rule is that Fuu and Rui’s powers are temporary, lasting only a year. Like in Creamy Mami, the Magical Angel, the powers in Magical Sisters Lulluto Lilly have an expiration date. This means Fuu and Rui need to finish whatever they’re trying to accomplish before their powers disappear. This limitation creates a sense of urgency, pushing them to respond to situations as they arise rather than carefully planning ahead.
If Fuu or Rui violate either rule while using their powers, they’ll immediately lose access to them, unable to fix any problems they’re facing. This creates a tense situation – a desperate scramble for resolution – which is exactly what a series like Magical Sisters Lulluto Lilly excels at. Beneath the bright visuals and pretty colors, there’s a constant feeling of something terrible about to happen, stemming from the potential loss of these incredible abilities.
Studio Pierrot’s Next Hit Magical Girl Anime Already Has a Stellar Cast Lineup
The new anime series, Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly, has announced its main cast and creative team, featuring several well-known figures in the magical girl genre. Leading the character design is Shintarô Dôge, a veteran key animator with over two decades of experience on popular projects. He’s previously worked on titles like Mobile Suit Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer, Juuni Taisen, and Namco X Capcom.
Animators Hirono Nishiki, Asami Sodeyama (known for her work on Sailor Moon Crystal), and Namiko Torii (who’s worked on Uma Musume: Pretty Derby and Fate/strange Fake) are bringing a dynamic and colorful style to Magical Sisters Lulutto Lilly. The trailer shows the series will emphasize heartfelt stories and the development of its characters.
May Tachibana and Nao Ojika will team up again in 2026, reprising their roles as Fuu and Rui. They both previously appeared in the 2026 series, Tamon’s B-Side, though in smaller parts. Ai Kayano, a well-known voice actor with 16 years of experience in popular series like Demon Slayer and The Promised Neverland, will play the character Azuki. Hiroki Nanami, Fuka Izumi, and Fû Hirohara are also joining the cast.
