James Woods made a shocking announcement on Thursday, revealing he is leaving the Republican Party.
The 78-year-old actor, who is generally considered to be politically conservative, has become a strong supporter of Donald Trump and his ‘Make America Great Again’ movement. He’s publicly praised Trump as the best president he’s ever seen, making him a particularly vocal advocate for Trump within the Hollywood community.
For years, Woods has publicly criticized leading Democrats like Gavin Newsom and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez through social media, often with harsh language.
He says his political opinions have negatively affected his career, leading to difficulties in Hollywood. He claims he’s faced professional consequences, like losing his agent and getting fewer job offers, because of speaking out – essentially, he feels he’s been ostracized for his views.
Actor James Woods has expressed frustration with the Republican Party. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he criticized Republican members of Congress for preventing an investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar, claiming they aren’t sufficiently challenging their political opponents.
Woods announced he is no longer supporting the Republican Party. He cited recent actions, including Senator Thune’s opposition to the SAVE Act, as the final straw, labeling those responsible as betrayers of both parties.
He announced he’s switching his political party to Independent, and suggested this explains why President Trump faces constant challenges.
Woods also pointed to a video of Congresswoman Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, criticizing her own party. This came after an attempt to get documents related to Ilhan Omar failed in the House of Representatives.
A video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by @WallStreetApes claimed that Republican lawmakers were shielding Ilhan Omar, and presented this as evidence of a supposed ‘uniparty’ system that avoids holding politicians accountable.
Mace suggested Republicans should follow through on promises they make during campaigns and investigate issues, specifically mentioning ongoing claims in conservative media about Omar related to immigration.
Omar has refuted the allegations, and previous investigations haven’t found any solid proof to back them up.
Woods continued to publicly support President Trump, recently posting a photo of Trump with his Cabinet in the Oval Office. On X, he called Trump and his team ‘the greatest President and greatest Cabinet, certainly in my lifetime.’
Yet the actor has not shied away from criticism either.
Recently, he strongly criticized Trump for what he considered inappropriate remarks about Rob Reiner.
Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home on December 14th. Their 32-year-old son, Nick, has been arrested in connection with the murders.
During a December interview on Fox News’s Jesse Watters Primetime, Woods spoke highly of the late filmmaker, calling him a ‘lifesaver’ and acknowledging the crucial role he played in reviving Woods’s career. The filmmaker was known for his strong liberal views.
He also defended Reiner from criticism, stressing that disagreements on politics shouldn’t mean people lose respect for each other.
I base my opinion of people on how they treat me, and Rob Reiner was incredibly supportive. We had a wonderful connection, genuinely cared for each other, and he always had my back, according to Woods.
People often asked me what I thought of Rob Reiner’s political views. I’d always respond that I believe he’s a true patriot. While I don’t share his ideas about how to best express that love of country – and he doesn’t agree with mine – we both respect each other’s dedication to America.
‘We had a different path to the same destination, which was a country we both love.’
Woods explained that Reiner revitalized his career by casting him in the 1996 film, Ghosts of Mississippi. This role was a turning point, changing his fortunes from being unemployed to receiving an Academy Award nomination.
Woods shared that Rob was instrumental in reviving his career. He explained that Rob championed him with the studio when they were hesitant to cast him in a film, and that he held Rob in high regard, saying he loved, respected, and cherished him.
He also noted that Reiner, in contrast to many, didn’t speak negatively about people like Charlie Kirk even after his death, which showed the respect and strong character Woods valued.
I was familiar with and supportive of Charlie Kirk. People made really awful statements, but Rob didn’t,” Woods explained.
Throughout his statement, Woods made it clear that despite any political disagreements, he deeply admired Reiner personally. He said, ‘I’m truly heartbroken. I loved him as a friend, as a creative artist, as a Hollywood legend, and as someone who loved his country.’
