MAFS Shocker: ‘Back-Up Brides’ Challenge Sparks Chaos and Temptation Among Couples!

Married At First Sight’s producers have pulled off their most twisted challenge yet.

This week’s episodes will delve into a contentious topic, named ‘Is the Grass Really Greener?’, which has been causing turmoil among the few remaining couples. It has been criticized as intense or even disturbing by those behind the scenes of the show.

The task presents an option for the couples to either continue with their current partner or consider a deeper connection with a potentially superior match, based on scientific findings.

However, the question posed was designed to trip people up – as anyone who agreed to connect with their ‘alternative choice’ would be deemed to have failed the test according to the viewpoint of relationship specialists.

Here’s what I can now exclusively disclose about the individuals who fell for the trap, along with the subsequent events that unfolded once they struck a deal, often referred to as a ‘pact with the unknown’.

Awhina’s match: Tim King

A disability caregiver named Awhina Rutene was teamed up with Tim King, who works for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), based on the Gold Coast.

On a professional level, their career backgrounds and shared values aligned perfectly. However, the question remains, did they have that intangible spark or connection?

This week, I had a chat with Tim, who shared the story of how events transpired for him to step in as Awhina’s understudy, despite initially being considered for a prominent role within the main cast.

He initially was set to compete originally, but his fiancé cancelled, leading him to travel to Europe instead. Later, he was invited back as a replacement groom, but just two days before he was scheduled to appear, he received a call informing him that another man had been chosen instead.

In a new turn of events, I was summoned once more as my initial fiancée chose to return. However, at that time, I was still in Europe, leading to them securing another groom for her instead.

After these false starts, he got the call to be a back-up in the ‘Grass is Greener’ task.

Tim emphasizes that although he got along well with Awhina, he didn’t appear on the show with the intention of stealing anyone’s spouse. Instead, he was ready to lend a supportive ear.

He was kind, yet not someone who appealed to me personally. I assumed more of a counseling role, and I didn’t wish to cause any trouble in someone else’s relationship.

Beth’s match: Oisin Scully

Beth Kelly had a very different experience.

She was teamed up with Irish fitness coach Oisin Scully, who operates at the well-known Sydney gym Acero, a facility owned by renowned fitness personality Jono Castano and his former spouse Amy.

While Oisin was eager to make an impression, Beth wasn’t entirely convinced.

This season, Oisin, much like Tim, was among the candidates who almost became a primary cast member. However, due to several factors, he wasn’t selected.

Although Awhina and Tim shared a good rapport and compatible values, Beth, who is married to Teejay Halkias, openly expressed finding Oisin as being arrogant.

‘There was no spark. She thought he was full of himself,’ a source tells me.

It seems that Beth wasn’t genuinely seeking a new romantic partner when she accepted the task, according to sources. Instead, they suggest that her primary intention was to help Teejay see her in a new light and value their relationship more deeply.

Teejay’s match: Tara-Lee Preston

Teejay was teamed up with Tara-Lee Preston, a spirited redhead from Sydney’s sales department, which eventually led him to question his allegiance towards Beth.

Unlike some of the other matches, Teejay and Tara hit it off effortlessly.

According to a reliable source, Teejay really enjoyed the rapport he shared with his backup partner. Their connection felt natural right from the start.

‘He had more spark with Tara in one day than he had with his actual bride in weeks.’

Paul’s match: Hannah

Paul Antoine’s back-up was a woman named Hannah.

Among all the intruders in the Grass is Greener challenge, she has proven to be the hardest to catch; I’m not aware of her surname yet.

What I know for certain is that she questioned Paul intensely during their date, probing into his reasons for attending if he maintained his contentment with his wife Carina.

Paul insisted he was just ‘curious’, but Hannah wasn’t buying it.

According to my source, she immediately confronted him, saying something like, “If you were content, you wouldn’t need to be here.

Carina, who had declined involvement in the task, showed no enthusiasm when she found out that Paul’s interest was piqued.

‘She felt betrayed,’ adds my insider. ‘This challenge tore them apart.’

Paul regretted his decision almost instantly, I am told.

I can’t help but feel the weight of my actions, for they could potentially shatter the bond I share with Carina. To her, what I did felt like emotional infidelity, and she’s not wrong in that assessment.

Adrian’s match: Maxi

It appears that Adrian Araouzou was paired up with an aspiring Afrikaner social media personality named Maxi, suggesting a possible connection between the two.

Since the end of filming, there has been evidence suggesting that they have developed feelings for each other, as they both continue to show appreciation for one another’s Instagram posts. This has led many to wonder if their relationship might be more than just a professional connection now.

What happens next?

A production insider tells me the challenge was devastating for certain marriages.

‘We lined up potential matches for everyone – essentially a Plan B,’ my source says.

The participants were inquired about their interest in meeting an alternate partner. It was surprising, as even contented couples were urged to consider other possibilities.

The unexpected turn of events caused many marriages to crumble, with some couples choosing to part ways instantly. It was deeply saddening to observe the emotional turmoil unfold.

The task was presented at dawn, with each participant working independently, unaware of their partner’s choice.

After they decided, they were unsure if their companion agreed or declined, as the source reveals.

The event led to complete disarray. Its purpose was clearly to unsettle everyone, and it succeeded. While some people refused outright, others found themselves second-guessing and ultimately wishing they hadn’t followed their backup plans.

For individuals who felt no remorse about it, it significantly strained their relationship’s trust. It served as a litmus test, revealing those fully invested in the process and those willing to gamble everything.

Who else said yes?

The controversial team consisting of Jacqui Burfoot and Ryan Donnelly, along with bride Jamie Marinos, were deemed unsuccessful by the experts’ standards as they chose to meet their backup options.

Unfortunately, there was an unexpected turn of events when the backup date failed to show up for Jamie’s planned outing, causing her to feel mortified and second-guessing her choice to end things with Dave Hand.

Additionally, it’s reported that Dave felt deeply let down by Jamie’s decision to connect with her backup option, despite the fact that Jamie ultimately failed to appear.

As a die-hard fan, let me share some inside scoop: Carina, Dave, Jeff Gobbels, and Rhi Disljenkovic were the ones who graciously declined to join in on the task at hand.

Experts defend the task

In a past conversation, relationship expert John Aiken justified the task. He explained that it was essential for the purpose of encouraging participants to step beyond their familiar boundaries.

In the show ‘Married at First Sight’, we’re constantly seeking innovative methods to test our contestants and discover just how strong their devotion truly is, as stated by him.

This task aimed at making them grapple with the notion of temptation, and questioning if they genuinely trust the pairing they have received.

Sexologist Alessandra Rampolla agreed, noting that it’s intriguing to observe the responses of individuals when they encounter challenging decisions.

The objective wasn’t to separate couples – instead, it was to identify which ones were ready to defend their bond.

The brutal aftermath

In light of broken trust and stormy relationships leading to some splits, the brutal finale challenge on MAFS undoubtedly ranks among the most startling surprises in the series’ disreputable past.

And with weeks left in the experiment, there’s no telling what chaos will unfold next.
