Chris Nield, a groom on Married At First Sight, is defending his direct way of acting on the show. Despite being labeled a ‘villain’ by many viewers, he says he doesn’t regret anything he’s done.
Chris told the Daily Mail on Thursday that he won’t apologize for anything he said, his type of women he’s attracted to, or how he behaved during the wedding ceremony.
‘I went in there and acted how I normally do in life,’ he said.
‘The things that came out of my mouth came out of my mouth. I own them. I’m accountable.’
Chris’s controversial comments follow an episode where he challenged the experts’ methods and freely talked about his preferred physical traits in a partner, specifying he’s attracted to women who are brunette, fit, and tanned.
He described it as similar to shopping at a supermarket and choosing what you want, a statement that quickly drew criticism online.
Even though people were upset, Chris explained that he truly wanted to participate in the experiment, though he wasn’t very optimistic about it working out.
‘Even if it was a 0.00001 per cent chance, there was still a chance,’ he said.
‘You never know what’s going to happen in life.’
Chris’s wedding took an unexpected turn when his new wife, Brook – a six-foot-tall fashion model – noticeably towered over him during the ceremony. Instead of a traditional kiss, she surprised everyone by greeting him with a hug.
The moment sparked instant commentary, with some viewers suggesting the move bruised Chris’s ego.
He shut that down swiftly.
He insisted it wasn’t about his own feelings, explaining that Brook was just careful about how she came across on TV.
‘It was more about her not wanting to be seen as someone who gives affection out easily.’
Chris talked about Brook’s early challenge, saying it actually ended up benefiting them both.
He described himself as very direct, but said her gentle guidance complements their dynamic well, stemming from genuine care and helping him stay on track.
As the couple started to make progress in a calmer environment, Chris faced a wave of online criticism. Viewers were scrutinizing everything about him, from how he acted to what he looked like.
‘People calling me a zero out of ten or talking about my ears,’ he said.
That actually stung more than anything I said. Honestly, I don’t worry about the opinions of people who don’t really know me.
Asked whether he was worried about being labelled the villain of the season, Chris laughed it off.
He stated he wasn’t concerned about criticism from Australian women, believing he had nothing to apologize for.
He also rejected the idea that the portrayal was negatively edited, stating he anticipated being shown in a favorable way.
He stated firmly that he stood by everything he’d said and wouldn’t take it back, accepting full responsibility for his words.
The groom confessed the experience was more emotionally challenging than he expected, and he was surprised by how strongly filming affected him.
He described a rush of feelings – sadness, frustration, and happiness – that became too much to handle, admitting he briefly became overwhelmed and cried.
As for what viewers can expect next, Chris warned there would be more of the same.
‘You can expect me continuing the same narrative you’ve seen so far,’ he said.
The recent events have created drama for several couples. Gia and Scott had a heated disagreement, Bec was hurt when Danny became distant after they became intimate in Fiji, and the honeymoon period revealed problems in other relationships.
But for Chris, one thing is clear.
Love him or loathe him, he is not backing down.
‘I’m not acting. This is me,’ he said.
