From the very beginning of Married at First Sight, Scott McCristal was a favorite of the show’s producers. He was confident, playful, openly showed off his wealth, and consistently provided dramatic moments that were perfect for television.
Like many prominent reality TV stars, he has a somewhat troubled past.
In March 2024, McCristal appeared in Southport Magistrates’ Court on the Gold Coast to address several charges connected to his car sales business, according to court records obtained by the Mail.
Although McCristal wasn’t convicted, he admitted to the crimes and was fined a substantial $25,000 for the 28 charges against him.
It’s not just his questionable business practices that are coming to light from his past. We recently reported that McCristal used to run an explicit content account on OnlyFans several years ago.
In a surprising turn of events, the ex-wife of McCristal is now claiming they may still be legally married.
The Daily Mail discovered photos from McCristal’s 2019 wedding to Marisa McElroy, a Californian woman, on the social media account of a jewelry store that sells diamonds.
Last week on TikTok, McElroy shared her thoughts on why McCristal hadn’t revealed on the show that he was previously married.
‘You didn’t hear ex-wife,’ she claimed, ‘because I’m still legally his wife.’
Her sister, Shelby, added that she’s the bride’s sister and pointed out they are still legally married in the United States.
The Mail couldn’t confirm whether McElroy and McCristal are still married according to the law.
Just to clarify, McCristal’s relationship with Gia Fleur on the show isn’t a legal marriage – none of the couples on Married at First Sight are legally married. So, he’s definitely not committing bigamy or anything of the sort.
According to sources familiar with the situation, McCristal – who has appeared on several reality TV shows like Ten’s Blind Date (2018), Channel Seven’s Holy Moley (2021), and Million Dollar Island (2023) – believes his marriage was officially ended everywhere. He reportedly received an email from an American court confirming the divorce.
Just months after appearing on the reality show Million Dollar Island – where he competed for a cash prize in Malaysia with 100 others – he faced issues with the Office of Fair Trading.
McCristal faced charges related to selling cars, including not getting required paperwork from sellers, not providing paperwork to buyers, falsely reporting mileage, and illegally altering odometers. Specifically, he was charged with seven counts of each of these offenses.
He was charged with offenses related to car sales, based on violations of the Motor Dealer and Chattel Auctioneers Act of 2014. This came after an investigation into his business.
McCristal Motors, a car dealership formerly located in Molendinar on the Gold Coast, used to have a 4.7-star rating on Google but is now closed.
Those who knew him well say McCristal anticipated his past would be brought up when he joined Married at First Sight, and he had prepared himself for that possibility.
‘Scott has moved on from all of that now,’ the mate told the Daily Mail.
He and Marisa married quickly after they met, but the marriage didn’t last – they divorced after just six months. He was in love with her initially, but those feelings didn’t endure.
He believes the divorce is complete and is surprised to hear her claim otherwise.
According to a friend, McCristal is upset about the charges and fine from his business, but the situation isn’t as bad as it seems.
They told the Mail he paid the fine and accepted the charges because the business license was in his name.
Okay, so he admits it happened, but honestly, he’s always said he wasn’t doing anything wrong! He just… somehow, these amazing cars would just appear for him, already modified, and he’d sell them. It’s like they were drawn to him! He’s not a mechanic or anything, he just has this… knack. I’ve always believed him, you know?
Viewers of Married at First Sight have seen the groom as someone who’s turned over a new leaf, going from a troublemaker to a more mature person – and his friends say that description is spot-on.
According to a source, he’s stopped drinking and is now sober. He avoids conflict and didn’t consume alcohol at recent social gatherings.
‘He’s definitely the MAFS “golden boy” this year – the producers love him.’
McCristal’s YouTube bio says he’s an entrepreneur passionate about living a long, healthy life, with expertise in finance and a habit of waking up very early.
He aims to help his followers improve themselves and live their best lives by focusing on fitness, healthy eating, and goal setting.
McCristal’s brother Cameron also has a public profile – or at least he used to.
Between 2015 and 2017, he frequently appeared in the media, particularly in the Daily Mail, due to his relationship with Skye Wheatley from Big Brother. He was also often featured on her Instagram and in her video blogs.
Cameron is now happily married to Hailey McCristal and they have four children together, putting his past behind him.
Gia Fleur, from Married at First Sight, is quickly becoming the most discussed contestant this season. She’s currently in a disagreement with fellow contestant Bec Zacharia, and this conflict has been building since the very beginning of the show.
At the first dinner party of the show, Gia and Bec got into a heated argument about their respective sex lives.
