Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen has one condition for a return to his iconic pop culture villain.
After playing a villain in the James Bond film Casino Royale, Mads Mikkelsen became known for his portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the Hannibal television series, which aired on NBC from April 2013 to August 2015. Although the show was visually striking and told a compelling, dark story, it was cancelled after three seasons. However, there has been ongoing talk of bringing it back.
Mads Mikkelsen recently told ScreenRant that he’d consider reprising his famous role, but only under certain conditions. While discussing his new film, The Last Viking, which comes out May 29th, he explained he’d be willing to do another Hannibal movie if showrunner Bryan Fuller was involved. However, he believes Hannibal works best as a TV series, saying Fuller would need to convince him a film could be done effectively within a reasonable runtime – around an hour and a half.
I really think the Hannibal he created works best as a TV character. He could definitely convince me to make a movie, but I believe his strengths – the way he writes and builds characters and stories – are better suited to a longer format, like a 13 or 14-episode series.
He also praised Fuller’s writing as perfect for extended narratives and expressed strong interest in revisiting the series, jokingly emphasizing the need to maintain a youthful energy. He also stressed the importance of acting quickly, noting that it’s been over a decade since the show ended and time is running out.
Most people would probably jump at the chance to relive those days, but time is passing quickly. It’s been about ten years, or maybe even longer. We try to stay young, but eventually, it just isn’t realistic. So, we’ll need to do it again in the next few years, and I think everyone would really enjoy it.
Fans are still hoping for a fourth season of Hannibal, especially as the show gains popularity with new viewers on streaming platforms. However, the series was cancelled because of low viewership and complicated ownership problems – the rights are currently divided between several companies. In an interview with ScreenRant in March 2026, creator Bryan Fuller explained the “messy” situation, stating that author Thomas Harris is working to consolidate all the rights under one entity.
As the show’s fate rests in limbo, the showrunner has expressed interest in adapting The Silence of the Lamb, which was previously made into a movie with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal. He also shared his dream casting of Zendaya as Clarice, who was portrayed by Jodie Foster in the film adaptation. Even as the clock ticks, cast members like Hugh Dancy and Mikkelsen continue to push for a season 4 revival.
Mikkelsen achieved a rare feat in popular culture. He took a hugely iconic movie character and gave him a new twist, putting his own mark on a horror icon. If he were to return to Hannibal, there is little doubt his iconic performance would be central to the revered horror TV show adaptation, and the opportunity to close out the character’s story might prove strong enough for Mikkelsen to return.
Despite only lasting three seasons, Hannibal was a remarkably well-executed show that ended at the right time, delivering a dark, fascinating, and unsettling story. Because the show and its characters are so memorable, there’s potential to revisit this world, and getting Mads Mikkelsen back would be a major win.
