Madonna’s Life Story Becomes Netflix Limited Series, Shawn Levy to Direct

Madonna, famously known as the “Material Girl,” has been a trailblazer for numerous artists, encouraging them to think beyond conventional boundaries. Her road to unprecedented stardom was marked by intense criticism due to her music being deemed provocative and questionable, with her career often embroiled in various controversies. Now, she’s prepared to share her journey, with the assistance of a prominent streaming service and an Academy Award nominee. As reported by Deadline, Madonna has teamed up with Netflix to convert her life and music into a limited series. The project is currently in its initial stages.

Shawn Levy, along with another individual (referred to as “She”), will serve as executive producers for a new TV project on Netflix. This is because 21 Laps Entertainment, Levy’s production company, has an exclusive overall deal with the streaming service. Although Netflix representatives did not comment, Deadline reported that discussions about the project have been ongoing and they are now starting from scratch. Importantly, this project is unrelated to the Madonna biopic that was in development at Universal and eventually canceled in 2023 due to the singer’s focus on her world tour. With numerous musical phases in her life, like Taylor Swift, Madonna has a wealth of stories spanning decades that could form the basis for an engaging series, allowing for a compelling narrative to unfold.

The upcoming biopic may kick off at the early stages of her career, but it’s uncertain where exactly it will start since the project is only just starting to take shape. Julia Garner, a three-time Emmy and Golden Globe award winner, was chosen to portray Madonna, also known as the Queen of Pop, in the abandoned Universal biopic. She has continued to express interest in the role, even performing alongside the artist during Madonna’s Celebration Tour in 2023. As a result, it seems likely that she will still be cast for the part unless there’s an unexpected scheduling issue or loss of enthusiasm.

Garner has experience collaborating with Netflix, as she recently agreed to work on another series for the streaming platform, which also aired her Emmy-winning show “Ozark”. She’s currently in final talks to star as the female lead and executive produce a limited series about the demise of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Fans are optimistic about a Madonna limited series due to Shawn Levy’s strong ties with Netflix. Interestingly, Levy achieved success before his partnership with Netflix; his filmography includes movies such as “The Pink Panther”, “Night at the Museum” (the first three films in the franchise), and “Deadpool & Wolverine”.

Madonna Doesn’t Want Anyone But Her to Tell Her Story

Madonna has consistently wanted to share her own perspective on her life experiences, as she believes that when others attempt to portray her story, it lacks the authenticity and richness that comes from personal involvement. In 2022, Madonna expressed this sentiment to Variety, stating that she doesn’t want “men with misogynistic tendencies” to be the ones shaping her narrative. Not every artist or actor gets the opportunity to assert their autonomy in how their stories are told, so Madonna is pioneering this approach.

Having lived an exceptionally remarkable life, I feel compelled to create an exceptional film of my own. Anticipating numerous attempts to portray my story, I decided to take the initiative, as many misogynistic men were planning to do so. Consequently, I asserted my position firmly by stating, “No one else will narrate my tale; it’s mine to tell.
