Madonna has described the eerie experience of receiving a message from her mother while she was in a hospital coma. She detailed the moment, calling it chilling, and shared what happened while her mother was unconscious.
The 67-year-old singer was taken to intensive care in 2023 after developing a bacterial infection, which caused her to temporarily stop her world tour.
In a recent interview on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Madonna recounted a profound experience: she described being visited by the spirit of her mother while she was unconscious.
The musician shared this information while talking about the passing of her brother, Christopher, and explained how it prompted her to gain new perspectives on her own life.
Oh my god, it absolutely breaks my heart even thinking about it! Madonna’s mom, Madonna Louise, was so young when she passed away – only 30 years old. It was back in 1963, and she lost her battle with breast cancer. Can you imagine? Our queen was just a little girl, only five years old, when she lost her mother. It’s just… devastating. I’ve read everything about her life, and this is always the part that gets to me. Madonna has talked about how much this impacted her, and it’s just so sad.
She recalled feeling like she was nearing the end and experiencing a clear moment of awareness. She said her mother appeared to her and asked, “Do you want to come with me?” She responded, “No.”

My assistant was with me in the room, though I was still unconscious. She heard me say ‘no‘. Later, when I woke up, I understood that the ‘no‘ referred to my need to forgive and reconcile with people I was still angry with. It was about letting go of old grudges and making things right.
Madonna revealed that her brother, Christopher, was one of the people she struggled with the most. Their issues began with disagreements about work, and the situation worsened when he published his memoir, Life With My Sister Madonna, in 2008. This led to a prolonged feud between them, as she considered him one of her ‘biggest enemies’.
The celebrity admitted it was difficult to move past her feelings of anger towards Christopher, explaining: ‘Forgiveness is key, even for those you see as your greatest adversaries.’
It was difficult losing my brother, who recently passed away. I believe the most painful losses are those of people we’re closest to […] because the people who cause us the most pain are often the ones we love the most.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve learned that dealing with deep betrayal is incredibly tough. When someone you love hurts you, especially if it feels like they weren’t even thinking clearly when they did it – like they acted without any awareness – well, it’s just a really difficult thing to accept. It truly is a bitter pill to swallow, and it takes time to process those feelings.
Madonna also revealed that she and Christopher had reconciled before he passed away from pancreatic cancer.
She explained that she went years without speaking to her brother. Years and years, she emphasized. It wasn’t until he became ill and asked for her help – saying, ‘I need your help‘ – that she had a moment of internal conflict, questioning whether to assist someone she considered an enemy. Ultimately, she decided to help him.
It felt like a huge relief, a heavy burden lifted. I was finally able to be with him, to hold his hand, and hear him say, ‘I love you and I forgive you‘, even though he was dying. That moment meant everything to me.

In the same interview, Madonna revealed that she was hospitalized in 2023 because of a bacterial infection, which required four days of care in the intensive care unit.
She said: ‘I was rehearsing for a tour, and I got a bacterial infection.
Just a moment I was feeling fine and moving around, and then suddenly I found myself in intensive care, unconscious for four days. After I left the hospital, they removed the breathing machine, and I was able to breathe independently. I also had sepsis, which is a life-threatening condition.
‘Everybody recovers at a different rate, and I’ve always seen myself as Superwoman.
I told myself, “Okay, I can handle this. I’ll get better, and I’ll start rehearsing again.” But honestly, I was completely drained. I didn’t have the strength or energy to even get out of bed, and I had no idea when it would all end.
Oh my gosh, sepsis is just… terrifying! It’s when your body basically goes into overdrive trying to fight off an infection – it releases all these chemicals, and it can be so dangerous. It’s not the infection itself that’s the biggest threat, it’s what your body *does* to fight it. I’ve been reading everything I can about it, and it’s truly life-threatening. It’s just… awful to think about!
These substances harm the body’s tissues and organs, potentially causing shock, organ failure, and ultimately, death.
Organ failure and death are more likely if sepsis is not recognised early and treated immediately.
