Madlib and Mac Miller Joint Album Release in Doubt Amid Lawsuit

Summary

  • Madlib and Mac Miller’s album may be unreleased due to a lawsuit
  • Madlib’s ex-manager Eothen “Egon” Alapatt claims the producer “unlawfully absconded” with property owned by their company
  • The countersuit follows Madlib’s 2024 suit against the exec for alleged mismanagement

The highly-anticipated Madlib and Mac Miller joint album may not see a release after all.

In response to a lawsuit brought forth by Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, former manager of the producer, a countersuit has been filed claiming that he was instrumental in producing the joint album for Madicine Show – a record label co-founded by Alapatt and Madlib. However, it is alleged that Madlib unlawfully took possession of Madicine Show’s assets, effectively establishing a new company called Madlib Invazion. This new label had promised to release the joint album as well as another project with Freddie Gibbs titled Montana, both of which are contractually obligated to be distributed through Sony Music.

In addition to his previous accusations, Alapatt alleges that Madlib is unwilling to collaborate and withholding records. Moreover, he claims that Madlib has been putting out projects created by Alapatt under the label Madicine Show. Furthermore, he states that one of Miller’s Madicine Show masters was used in Talib Kweli’s Liberation 2, and another master produced by Alapatt for the Black Star album No Fear of Time was also included in Liberation 2.

In November 2024, Madlib filed a lawsuit against Alapatt, alleging poor management of their shared record store and business venture. He claimed that Alapatt acted selfishly, withheld information, repeatedly violated his responsibilities towards Madlib, and demonstrated persistent and widespread mismanagement. Furthermore, he accused Alapatt of abusing his position within the two companies and negatively impacting Madlib’s professional and business endeavors.
