This Wednesday, May 20th, a new program called Under Suspicion: Kate McCann will re-examine the investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance – one of the most intensely debated and heartbreaking cases in British history. The program will focus on the emotional toll the disappearance took and the ongoing search for answers.
This 90-minute Channel 5 drama centers on Kate McCann, Madeleine’s mother, portrayed by Laura Bayston. It depicts the increasing scrutiny from Portuguese police in the months following Madeleine’s disappearance during a family vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007. Madeleine was just three years old when she went missing from her family’s apartment while her parents were having dinner with friends nearby.
Three months after Madeleine disappeared, Portuguese detectives were growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in the case. When Kate McCann is called in for questioning, she expects a routine update, but quickly senses that the police now view her as a suspect.
Rather than receiving help and understanding, she’s treated with distrust. Investigators start to focus on gaps in her memory of the night Madeleine went missing, and Kate is caught in a difficult position – she wants to help solve the case, but she also needs to defend herself against accusations.
The plot is based on actual events. In 2007, Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine’s parents, were investigated by Portuguese police and briefly considered suspects. However, the investigation was closed in 2008 and they were cleared of any wrongdoing.
Even though Portuguese police initially closed the investigation, the search for Madeleine continued. British authorities still treat it as a missing person case, and over time, several new people have become persons of interest.

In 2011, the Metropolitan Police began their own investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance, called Operation Grange. This grew into a large-scale operation two years later, with British detectives conducting thorough searches in Praia da Luz. By 2013, investigators had pinpointed 41 people who could potentially be connected to the case.
While many people came under scrutiny, Christian Brückner eventually became the main focus of the investigation. He was first connected to the case in 2013, and German authorities officially named him as their prime suspect in June 2020. Portuguese police also investigated him as a suspect, reopening their case in 2013. Despite being a suspect, he has never been charged with any crime related to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and maintains he had no involvement.
Born in Germany in 1976, Christian Brückner (originally Christian Fischer before his adoption, as reported by The Times) has a long history of criminal activity, including sex offenses, theft, and drug-related crimes. He first faced convictions for offenses involving children in the early 1990s.
He moved to the Algarve region of Portugal in 1995 and lived in a neglected house near Praia da Luz until 2007 – the year Madeleine McCann vanished. When investigators named him a suspect in the McCann case, he was already in prison in Germany. He’d been sentenced to seven years for raping a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal in 2005 and was also serving time for drug offenses.

In June 2024, a German investigator reported that authorities found two email accounts potentially connected to Christian Brückner. These accounts are believed to have been used to share images of child abuse, and one reportedly contained information about Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
Although Christian Brückner has long been a suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, he hasn’t been charged because investigators haven’t found enough solid proof. He’s also been found not guilty of other sex-related accusations in recent years. His release from prison in September 2025 brought the case back into the spotlight, raising questions about whether he’d ever face charges in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
British officials are still gathering evidence to try and charge Brückner with murder and kidnapping. However, it’s proving difficult because German law makes it hard to send German citizens to countries outside the European Union for trial. Now that Britain has left the EU, authorities might instead try to prosecute Brückner in Germany or Portugal if they can find enough evidence to support a case there.
