Madame Web Crushed The New Mutants At The Box Office
Although it was critically panned as a poor film, it nonetheless surpassed box office expectations for another overlooked Marvel production. Now that both the Sony Spider-Man Universe and the Fox X-Men franchises have come to an end, with certain characters transitioning into the MCU, it’s intriguing to reflect on their peaks and valleys. Remarkably, Madame Web, one of Marvel’s poorest-performing movies, has outshone a less favored film from the Fox X-Men era in terms of audience interest.
Although both the X-Men series and the films produced by Fox were usually well-liked, not all of them achieved success. On the flip side, the SSU put out numerous titles, most of which were met with negative responses. Nevertheless, both franchises made hundreds of millions from many of their movies. Nonetheless, not every film managed to do this, and while Madame Web is close to being the least successful Marvel movie in terms of box office earnings, another film grossed less than half of what it earned.
Madame Web Is One Of The Lowest Grossing Marvel Movies In Recent History
Madame Web Was A Disappointment In Numerous Ways
I must admit, the reasons behind Madame Web‘s remarkably low box office performance were quite diverse. Despite the steady flow of films from the SSU, many of them didn’t resonate well with audiences. Perhaps it was the constant comparison to the MCU, or maybe it was the absence of Spider-Man despite building a universe around his character. Yet, there was a dedicated audience who kept coming back for more, drawn in by the quirky charm and mindless entertainment these films offered.
Contrary to the promotional hype, Madame Web fell short of delivering mindless fun as advertised. Although marketed as a grand superhero team-up with fresh Spider-heroes, the movie featured only one brief scene in costume, set within a dream sequence. Moreover, these characters were never depicted acquiring their powers, and Madame Web’s sudden power surge occurred without any prior training or development of her abilities. As a consequence, many viewers found it disappointing and opted not to watch the film.
Madame Web Still Made Over Double The New Mutants’ Box Office
The New Mutants Was A Uniquely Low-Performing Marvel Film
Even though Madame Web earned over $100 million at the box office, it still surpassed The New Mutants’ earnings by more than double. However, when you consider their production costs, Madame Web was significantly pricier, with an estimated budget of around $80 million (not including marketing expenses). This likely led to a substantial loss for Sony. On the other hand, The New Mutants had a production budget of approximately $67 million, suggesting it incurred losses even before accounting for any marketing costs.
Movie | Box Office (via The Numbers) |
Madame Web | $100,298,817 |
The New Mutants | $47,535,251 |
It’s apparent from the data that neither movie garnered strong performances at the box office, and it’s likely they were financial burdens for their respective production companies. However, luckily, _The New Mutants_ appears to have had minimal expenditure on its promotional campaign, a claim supported by the fact that many Marvel enthusiasts are unaware of its existence. Nevertheless, it seems that _Madame Web_ generated more interest compared to the final chapter of the Fox _X-Men_ series.
Why Madame Web’s Box Office Results Are Over Twice The New Mutants’
But There Are Clear Reasons Behind Why The New Mutants Was A Monumental Failure
Earlier reports indicated that Fox’s X-Men universe was wrapping up when The New Mutants debuted in 2020. By this time, Fox had been bought by Disney, but they later connected the universes through movies like Deadpool and Wolverine. However, The New Mutants was actually filmed way before, and due to Disney’s negotiations with Fox, its release date kept getting delayed. When it finally hit theaters, Disney didn’t allow any reshoots or additional development of the years-old storyline. Consequently, the film was released with minimal promotion, leaving it to fight for survival on its own.
In another words, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) aimed to regain the reins, and although the film had to be unveiled, it was done in such a manner that it would largely fly under the radar. However, when Madame Web arrived, the movie surprisingly turned out to be quite zany and amusing, even though it had its share of silliness. Despite a smaller audience, the humor in the film was enjoyable, and I’m pleased that Madame Web gained more acclaim and earned more at the box office, as it was notably superior to The New Mutants.
