Madam on Channel 9 Sparks Outrage: Viewers Call it ‘Pornographic’ and ‘Filth’

A displeased spectator criticized Channel Nine for broadcasting the acclaimed New Zealand drama Madam, labeling it as “inappropriate” and unsuitable for TV viewing.

An angry Australian expressed their disapproval to 2GB morning host Ben Fordham, strongly criticizing the program that features an American woman setting up a “feminist, ethical brothel” in New Zealand.

The viewer strongly believed that if former Nine boss, Kerry Packer, were still alive, he would be deeply displeased to learn about the show’s airing on the network.

The individual who penned this might not recall, as they are relatively young, an incident where Kerry Packer, now deceased, paused one of his own television programs mid-broadcast because the material was deemed inappropriate, and they communicated this to 2GB.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to express my concern about the content being broadcasted at 9 pm and beyond, which seems to be less than uplifting. It underscores a potential downward trend in our society’s values when such programming is deemed appropriate for prime-time viewing, or even considered at all.

‘Even if this is legally allowed to be aired so what, does anybody proof watch these shows?’

A concerned spectator expressed their opinion that the program might not be suitable for young audiences, particularly those who happened to be on vacation from school during its debut.

They expressed that it’s unfair and potentially harmful to subject our community’s children, seniors, and everyone else who assumes a channel change is safe, to encounter disturbing images that could leave lasting mental impressions on them, and suggested legal action may be appropriate.

‘How dare you steal people’s, who choose to live differently to your standards, innocence.’

Another told Fordham that his mother in law was shocked to see the show.

She declared it to be utterly revolting dirt, likening it to explicit content. To be honest, she found it quite disturbing.

‘She said she could not get the image out of her head and was scarred by it.’

People’s displeasure with the 10-episode show, rated MA 15+, was also reflected on the internet as many other individuals expressed their dissatisfaction online.

One individual expressed their disappointment by stating, “Channel Nine, you’re tarnishing your reputation with such low-quality content. It’s borderline explicit, and it’s inappropriate for television broadcast. I can’t believe this was aired; it’s disgraceful. With children still on break from school, this is particularly concerning.

‘Standards are in the gutter now. It should have been on later at night,’ another wrote.

‘We need more family shows on TV not this trash,’ another said.

The film is inspired by the real-life tale of madam Antonia Murphy, who was a brothel owner, and features Rachel Griffiths, recognized primarily for her portrayal of Rhonda in Muriel’s Wedding.

The series premiered in New Zealand on July 4, 2024, before reaching Australia on February 4, 2025.

Madam notably won the Golden Nymph Award for Best Creation at the 2024 Monte Carlo TV Festival.

Madam airs Tuesdays 9.00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
