Machina X Flayon: My dopamine is my fans
Machina X Flayon of HOLOSTARS English says that his fans is his source of dopamine.
As a devoted admirer, I’m excited to share that Machina X Flayon is one of HOLOSTARS English’s Virtual YouTubers, having made his debut in 2023. Over the years, he’s accumulated some truly precious memories in his professional journey – and I’m thrilled to recount a few of these highlights with you. Moreover, he offered a captivating peek into the world behind the scenes as a VTuber.
Previously, esports.gg had a conversation with Flayon, where he shared insights about his participation in the latest Reject Fight Night X Sajam Slam competition. You can read about it here.
Machina X Flayon: Fighting game connoisseur
On January 8, 2023, Flayon made his debut as a member of the initial TEMPUS group within the English division of Holostars, which is the male counterpart to hololive.
In his initial live stream, he expressed his passion for fighting games to his audience, affectionately known as the “Machiroons.” Primarily functioning as a Virtual YouTuber, he predominantly posts game content on his YouTube channel, yet he is also a talented entertainer.
Can you name your top five favorite fighting games of all time?
Current Code, which brings together all the Melty Bloods in one package.
1. Under Night In-Birth (or UNICLR) – This refers to the entire series.
2. BlazBlue Continuum Shift II – This is a specific game within the BlazBlue series.
3. My fifth choice, which is my guilty pleasure, would probably be: BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle.
With Continuum Shift, I found an unexpected sense of affinity towards it. Since you might recall that I was using my PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita, let me clarify that I played Calamity Trigger on the PSP. This game developed a unique bond between us as it was ported to such a platform, though it was slightly pixelated due to being on the PSP, giving everything a somewhat muffled sound, reminiscent of audio coming from a potato or similar object.
Initially, I found myself quite fond of it, even still. At some point, I unintentionally damaged my PSP by placing it on an air vent as a child. The screen cracked, but it was functional. Despite the damage, I persisted in using it to play. Eventually, Continuum Shift II was released, and I thought it was ideal. Then came Unlimited Hazama, which could be considered my first genuine encounter with an SNK-style boss. They were incredibly difficult, leaving little room for excuse and often resulting in a thorough thrashing. This intense struggle might explain the Stockholm Syndrome or suspension bridge effect.
In terms of BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, it satisfies a small desire I have for watching multiple characters engage in combat. Moreover, it’s incredibly enjoyable since the game is set up in such a way that anyone can potentially defeat you if given the chance. I’ve clocked around 200 hours on this game, often spending time in the lobby, battling endlessly. My team usually consisted of Linne from Under Night In-Birth and Hakumen from BlazBlue. They’re a formidable duo, at least for my playstyle. So, if I were to list the first five characters that come to mind, they would be these.
What about top three games you’d like to stream?
Oh, it seems like you’re mentioning the top three games and one of them is “Freedom Wars”. Originally released on the PlayStation Vita, it has recently been remade for PC on Steam.
It used to be Pokémon, but now Pokémon is a bit more accessible, so I’m really grateful for that.
It seems these games often contain adult or suggestive content. What draws me to them is not just the explicit elements, but rather the deep, emotional stories they tell. Therefore, any game with similar characteristics would be of interest to me. However, I should clarify that when I say ‘similar’, I’m referring to a broad category of games I enjoy, because I’d love to discover more titles like these and highlight their rich characters, themes, or even the mental journeys depicted by the main characters, especially when they undergo a mental breakdown.
Perhaps you might be referring to “Fate/Unlimited Codes”. It has elements of a fighting game, yet it deviates from the typical formula. Imagine it as a game with fighting game-like aspects, but it’s not quite like comparing it to games such as “Bleach Blade Battlers” or “Bleach: Shattered Blade” on Wii. However, these three games might be what you are looking for, but I’m not entirely certain.
So, does HuniePop have heartfelt stories?
Yes, yes, yes, you got it, you got it, you got it!
In simpler terms, HuniePop is quite unique among the games I play; it carries emotional narratives, but with a twist – it’s more unconventional compared to Trouble Days, another game I enjoy.
In the world of Trouble Days, I found myself a solitary soul, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and love. Along the way, I met someone extraordinary from another realm, and together we stood up for what mattered most – our dreams and desires. I shared my culture with her, and we grew to cherish it together.
In this game, I have a companion in the form of a succubus. It’s typical of many eroge games, I suppose. But the main character isn’t just about love at first sight; he also wrestles with his own flaws. He learns to accept and appreciate himself before he can truly love another, which is a powerful lesson in this engaging tale.
Once upon a time, I found myself believing that the girl was on the verge of leaving due to his self-pity and repeated thoughts of “I’m not good enough for her. I’m not.” Yet, this self-doubt is something many experience. It’s a recurring theme in stories like this one, as it can be a lingering flaw throughout one’s life. And that’s the essence of ‘Trouble Days’.
HuniePop, self-explanatory. I have nothing to say. I like Audrey!
Machina X Flayon on his musical career top picks
Besides frequently broadcasting his gameplay sessions for his followers, Flayon is also an active musician. One of his popular songs is the cover he did with Banzoin Hakka titled “Märchen Boyfriend and Märchen Girlfriend.” This cover has amassed more than 500,000 views.
If you had to pick favorites from your songs, which would they be?
I have a preferred choice, but it hasn’t been released yet. The album I’m eagerly waiting for is Orthodoxia by Guchiry. It’s known for its fast tempo. Moreover, Guchiry’s music often incorporates Vocaloid elements and stories, although they don’t explicitly explain the narratives. Instead, listeners must discern the storylines for themselves by picking up on subtle hints.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say one of those tunes might be GRATEFUL★DEAD★MARCH – the theme song for Kanato Sakamaki in Diabolik Lovers. It’s got a vibe similar to my previous choices like Trouble Days, just with a twist tailored more towards female gamers. The character is well-crafted, and the voice actor, Kaji Yuki, is quite renowned.
This seven-minute track is quite enjoyable. It’s an incredibly fun song, and I particularly appreciate ones like this because they offer a refreshing change from the predictable structure of many modern songs or anime themes. In contrast, character songs or Vocaloid tracks often deviate from the norm, making them exciting to sing. Therefore, I would describe these two categories as being both enjoyable to perform and fun to listen to.
What about your favorite works from HOLOSTARS English as a whole?
As a music enthusiast, I’d say that “Dead World” by the talented Utsu-P is undoubtedly one of my favorites. Collaborating on this track with Banzoin Hakka, Gavis Bettel, and myself was an incredible experience. Being a rock fan, working on this song alongside Bettel made us both extremely joyful.
And then I think, I like the feel of Woven Fates, which was done by Lilypichu.
And then if I had to pick a third, maybe, hmm, I think, I like ARMIS’ Bloodhounds.
Additionally, I quite enjoy two of Banzoin Hakka’s compositions – Shattered Wings being the first, followed by another one, I believe it’s his second. If pressed to choose just one, however, DEAD WORLD takes the lead as my favorite.
Behind-the-scenes as a VTuber
What can you share about what goes on behind the scenes?
There’s always going to be a divide, right? Because I’m an ace mecha pilot.
When I’m not broadcasting, I’m engaged in mechanical combat – as a simple example. However, the actual act of streaming tends to involve sharing a schedule or, much like me, sometimes forgetting to post one due to exhaustion. This role seems perpetual – it’s a 24-hour commitment. You need to be reachable at any time if your supervisor requires assistance, and unexpected events can arise where they might ask, “Can you step in for this? Are you available?
It’s essential to both create your content and strategize its execution. You need to decide on what you wish to accomplish, followed by a consideration of when to execute this plan. Additionally, it’s crucial to ask yourself questions like, “Is this idea marketable? Am I prepared to potentially suffer a setback?” Or perhaps, circumstances may arise where you can no longer stick with your content plan.
In essence, continuing to play Trouble Days might be challenging due to its nature as a complex game, even though it’s something I’d enjoy more of. It’s because there are many moving pieces that require strategy rather than brute force. This can also apply to running a company or working in retail, where you can’t just dictate your plans. Instead, you must adapt to the circumstances at hand.
It’s essential to keep in mind that there’s a significant amount of advance planning involved when it comes to participating in games. You must inform your manager about the dates on which you will be playing, as scheduling conflicts with major events need to be avoided. Ensure that you check the schedule regularly to prevent any overlaps.
Off-camera, there’s a great deal of coordination and many components involved in organizing major events, like my [3D] showcase. For instance, I didn’t operate the camera during that particular event; instead, there are dedicated staff members who work diligently to capture the best possible shots of you. When they do this, it becomes quite evident how relaxed and professional everyone on the team is.
Regardless of our diverse origins, there’s a common passion for the job shared among many of us here. It’s heartening to witness this unity, but I’d argue that much of it involves careful planning for the days ahead. You must understand what strategies are effective, and then be ready because what worked today might not yield the same results tomorrow.
No matter who you are, there might always be someone more skilled or advanced; if you look at it in a competitive way, that’s just how things work. I consider myself quite talented, but I’m confident that there are probably five independent individuals out there who are already excelling in what I aspire to do, and they’re doing it twice as well. But that’s alright.
In essence, it seems like maintaining a strong determination similar to that, balancing the desire not to let down your supporters while still valuing yourself personally, is somewhat akin to returning to school and personal growth. To put it simply, it’s about preparing diligently behind the scenes for significant milestones, much like getting ready for big events in life.
Looking back to your debut a couple of years back, then to your first 3D live, and where you are now, how do you feel about your growth and progress?
It’s satisfying! Looking at him, it seems as though he’s struggling to fit in, like a fish out of water. Despite being ready, his readiness appears to be misguided. However, I believe I managed quite effectively.
The first time I watched my latest performance, and then revisited my initial debut, it struck me as if I was looking at a mirror image. Unlike many others who debut, they tend to shed their original personality. However, mine still seems to be present. At most, my voice might deepen, but that’s just a part of my condition. It feels reassuring.
Reflecting on my initial performance, I must admit, it’s something I’m quite pleased with, but there are tweaks I might consider. If given the opportunity, I likely would have approached my presentation differently, as I hold a strong affinity for theater.
Initially, my presentation was dominated by idol performances, which I enjoy greatly. However, if given the chance, I would transform that part into a narrative or theatrical piece, as that was my original vision. In essence, I aimed for a storytelling format. Despite not fully achieving this goal, I believe I made the best out of it and it turned out quite well. People seemed to appreciate it, and the staff was supportive throughout the process.
I can’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction when I reflect on it, and thankfully, there isn’t too much awkwardness. To put it simply, I’m comfortable with myself – calm, collected, and confident. It’s like saying, “That’s me.”
In essence, that sums it up.
Message to the Machiroons for their support, especially during your competition?
I want to beat you guys up!
Hey there, here’s a rephrase from my perspective as a gamer: Some of my followers get quite surprised when I blurt out random things or mention something unexpected like “macaroni and cheese.” They’re like pets – always reacting in the most unpredictable ways, which can be pretty amusing.
I believe I owe my fans a great deal of gratitude, as my determination is quite strong. If streaming wasn’t enjoyable for me, you would likely sense it. My enjoyment often stems from the interaction with my fans, who act like a playful cat. They can be easily startled or get hyperactive, much like when cats have “zoomies” and run around at unusual hours, such as 3 a.m. It’s amusing to engage with them in this way. I want to make it clear that I am absolutely not a bully at all.
