M3GAN 2.0’s Shocking Kate Bush Song Explained
SPOILERS ahead for the latest of new horror movies, M3GAN 2.0, now playing in theaters.
Hey film enthusiasts! Let me tell you, M3GAN is quite the triple threat. Not only is she stepping into the spotlight for her first sequel, but she’s also proving herself as an action star in addition to her horror icon status, as we saw in the initial movie. What sets her apart even more is her ability to dance and sing on cue. Remember when she stole the show with her interpretation of Sia’s “Titanium” and became a TikTok dance sensation? Well, it was only fitting that she’d display those skills once again!
During a Zoom chat with writer-director Gerard Johnstone regarding “M3GAN 2.0”, he shared the backstory for the killer doll’s new musical performance in the upcoming sequel. In his own words, this particular song and dance sequence was unavoidable.
At some stage during the film, I felt it necessary to include a catchy tune, coupled with an engaging dance routine. However, I wanted to surprise the viewers by presenting these elements in an unconventional manner.
In an unexpected twist during M3GAN’s performance, the audience was captivated by dance moves unlike any we’ve seen from her before. The director opted to have her sing Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” around halfway through the film while she attempted to portray her role as Gemma’s aunt to Allison Williams. As he explained further in our conversation:
It occurred to me that it would be hilarious if she serenaded Gemma this time, since I was certain that Gemma wouldn’t be able to handle it, making her an ideal target. Furthermore, the movie aims to add a touch of humanity to M3GAN.
In the recently released film we reviewed as a 3.5 out of 5 in our M3GAN 2.0 assessment, the menacing doll transforms from adversary into an ally for characters Gemma and Cady. This shift occurs when a more threatening version of the doll, named AMELIA, is manufactured with the intention of hunting them down. To protect themselves from AMELIA, Gemma is compelled to reconstruct M3GAN, ultimately turning her into a heroine rather than a villainess in this unexpected twist of events.

As a movie buff, I can’t help but share an amusing scene where M3GAN tries to comfort Gemma. In an unexpected turn of events, M3GAN starts singing “This Woman’s Work,” a song I managed to secure the rights for after writing a heartfelt letter to Kate Bush, explaining my intentions for the character (as reported by USA Today).
I’m particularly fond of the fact that the entire scene concludes with Gemma silencing her from singing. Johnstone explained to us why it was an ideal choice for a song using these very words:
In this specific situation, she’s attempting an action that she believes will comfort Gemma, but unfortunately, it only worsens the situation significantly. As for the song selection, I’m quite fond of it – a sentiment I’ve held for years. Initially, I wished M3GAN would perform Woman’s Work during the closing credits of the first film, but the idea came to me too late for implementation. Ever since, it’s been a lingering thought, and given its powerful message about motherhood, it seemed fitting to use it here.
Interestingly, the artist behind the 1988 hit tune, initially composed for the film “She’s Having A Baby,” has had horror-themed properties reach out to her before regarding the use of her songs. Notably, she gave permission for “Stranger Things” to utilize her song “Running Up That Hill,” which reclaimed its position atop the charts in 2022 following this collaboration.
In my opinion, although Johnstone may not know Kate Bush’s feelings regarding the final scene, I personally find myself thoroughly enjoying the song selection. It was amusing to witness Gemma being serenaded by M3GAN, and the song choice was truly impressive, leaving an indelible impression as the movie progresses to theaters and later streaming platforms, allowing me to rewatch it multiple times.
