M3GAN 2.0: The Shocking Twist That Turns Horror into Action!

If you’ve seen the trailer for M3GAN 2.0 and thought that this upcoming horror movie might offer a mix of science fiction, action, and comedy instead of just being a slasher, then you’re on the right track! And rest assured, the transformation of the killer doll in this sequel looks impressive. Recently, I had the chance to talk with writer/director Gerard Johnstone about the release of M3GAN 2.0, and I was eager to learn more about the shift in the franchise’s direction.

Initially, when the filmmaker created the original M3GAN with an estimated budget of $12 million, he never anticipated the incredible popularity she would achieve. Fast forward nearly three years, following her rise to fame as a viral TikTok dance phenomenon, a star at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, and an icon within the LGBTQ+ community, it’s almost time for M3GAN 2.0, and Johnstone discussed how fan reactions influenced the creation of the sequel, in his own words:

Stepping into M3GAN 2.0 was certainly a unique journey, yet it was the overwhelming affection for the character that fueled us. We felt compelled to create something unexpected, yet still honor the elements that made her endearing from the start.

In a refreshing twist, the character from the movie M3GAN has won hearts, often being likened to horror icons such as Chucky. However, unlike a typical slasher film, the original production offers a wider spectrum of themes. As Gerard Johnstone revealed during our Zoom conversation, he hails from a comedy background, and M3GAN leans heavily towards that genre (with a clever play on words). Furthermore, he added:

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can tell you that my first watch was like uncovering a hidden gem. At first glance, it seemed to be a straightforward horror flick with a dash of dance numbers. But as the credits rolled, it was clear this movie was hiding something more: a satirical comedy twist!

Marketing such a film is a challenge – blending horror and humor isn’t an easy sell. So when it hit the theaters, we were led to believe it was a pure horror. However, as the audience began to delve deeper into its mysteries, those unexpectedly hilarious moments emerged, adding layers of depth that made this movie truly unique.

Intrigued myself, I settled down to watch M3GAN, and it turned out to offer much more depth than a contemporary remake of Child’s Play. Initially, the producers at Blumhouse opted to label the original film as horror to attract viewers, but once audiences gave it a chance, they quickly grasped the true intentions of the creators.

As a cinema aficionado, diving into the next chapter, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of liberation, knowing that I could make M3GAN 2.0 an unanticipated twist. In my creative journey, I found myself exploring uncharted territories.

Initially, the enthusiastic response from fans suggested we could further explore the character and sequel with even more enjoyable elements. The enthusiasm was infectious, prompting us to develop the project in a way that felt playful and exciting, rather than fan service. I saw it as an opportunity to introduce some of the bold moves I had been eager to make within this film.

In the cast of M3GAN 2.0, many actors from the original film are returning, joined by new comedic talents such as Jemaine Clement and Aristotle Athari from Saturday Night Live. Similar to James Cameron’s Terminator franchise, it initially follows a science fiction horror plot where a character like Sarah Connor is pursued by an android, much like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original movie. However, unlike its predecessor, the storyline may evolve as the sequel progresses.

Similar to how T2: Judgement Day, the movie M3GAN is no longer the menacing robot she once was in 2.0. In reality, M3GAN isn’t a robot until the character Ivanna Sakhno’s AMELIA is introduced. AMELIA, a new and dangerous robot, poses a threat to global safety. This deadly robot came into existence when someone obtained the plans for M3GAN. As a result, Gemma finds it necessary to reconstruct M3GAN so that AMELIA has a worthy opponent.

Action looks great on M3GAN 2.0! You can check out the movie in theaters this Friday, June 27.
