M3GAN 2.0: The Sequel That Leaves Horror Behind for Action-Packed Fun!
In early 2023, M3GAN turned out to be an unexpected box office sensation, raking in approximately $182 million globally on a budget of merely $12 million. This success can be attributed to the movie’s unique blend of unsettling horror and humorous comedy elements. The film introduced an AI-controlled doll equipped with popular dance moves from memes and the uncanny ability to perform a spontaneous a cappella version of Sia’s “Titanium”. However, this doll was also capable of terrifying actions such as chasing school children into oncoming traffic and using a machete fatally. Two years later, M3GAN 2.0 returns with its titular android character in a sequel that focuses more on comedy, but sacrifices the horror aspect in favor of a more action-oriented narrative.
As I sit down to pen my thoughts on the anticipated sequel to the chilling horror flick, I find myself reflecting on the usual paths such films tread: either a rehash of the original narrative or an escalation in which our villain encounters an even more formidable adversary, akin to the iconic example set by Terminator 2. In a bold move that propels the franchise into uncharted territory, M3GAN 2.0, under the masterful direction of Gerard Johnstone, chooses the latter route. This courageous decision sees our protagonist, M3GAN (played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis), embark on a redemptive journey following her prior destructive rampage, offering a fresh perspective to the series.
In my view, it was crystal clear due to the unprecedented worldwide response to the initial film. The advanced technology depicted in M3GAN is currently a global point of contention among nations, as everyone’s vying to be the pioneer in achieving Artificial General Intelligence. This seemed like a narrative that demanded a broader stage for its unfolding.
Over the past two years, roboticist Gemma (Allison Williams) has transformed into a strong proponent of strict government control over AI, while her young niece Cady (Violet McGraw), who is now a teenager, has immersed herself in computer science and the martial art of aikido as a means to cope with her past experiences. However, one fateful night, FBI agents storm their home unexpectedly, revealing that M3GAN’s digital consciousness survived the destruction of her physical form, and her technology was misused to create a high-tech military AI known as AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno). To make matters worse, AMELIA has turned against humanity and seeks its destruction.
In essence, the plot unfolds with Gemma joining forces with M3GAN to construct a superior version of her. The objective is to prevent worldwide destruction alongside colleagues Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez), Tess (Jen Van Epps), and tech advocate Christian (Aristotle Athari) who surprisingly emerges as the creator of AMELIA. This character, initially portrayed as a potential love interest, holds a surprising secret. The narrative, while intricate in its details, is essentially a satirical warning about the advancement of artificial intelligence. Director Johnstone views the sequel less as an argument against AI development and more as an exploration of the consequences when AI isn’t nurtured correctly, likening it to parenting a child. As he puts it, “We’re not saying ‘Don’t build AI.’ We’re asking, ‘What happens when you don’t train it right?'” This was expressed in an interview with Creative Screenwriting.
Eventually, a thrilling confrontation unfolds at a tech campus in Palo Alto, leading to M3gan displaying genuine empathy by giving up her own existence to safeguard Cady and Gemma, thereby neutralizing the danger posed by AMELIA and the enigmatic Motherboard AI she seeks. However, don’t fret, as the concluding scenes of M3GAN 2.0 hint that M3GAN’s programming remains intact, paving the way for potential spin-offs across diverse genres.
Johnstone implies that there could potentially be five more films in this series, as he stated to the Hollywood Reporter, “I wouldn’t be shocked if that happens.” He even hinted at a possible return for the fifth film.
