The 2022 film M3GAN was a huge and unexpected success. While its recent sequel didn’t do as well in cinemas, it’s now finding an audience and gaining popularity on streaming services.
Following its success on digital platforms and Netflix, M3GAN 2.0 is now performing well on HBO Max, according to FlixPatrol, despite not being available for streaming in the US.
Despite a slow start, the movie quickly became a worldwide success, hitting the top spot in 20 countries on February 8th. M3GAN 2.0 is also performing well on Netflix, currently ranking third in New Zealand and fourth in Australia. While its theatrical run in the US has ended, it still managed to attract audiences.
The sequel, M3GAN 2.0, arrived in theaters on June 27, 2025, but wasn’t as successful as the original. Made with a budget of $15 to $25 million, it only earned $39.1 million at the box office. Typically, a movie needs to make two and a half times its budget to be considered profitable, taking into account that theaters keep half of the ticket revenue.
I really loved the first M3GAN – it was a fun, scary, sci-fi slasher movie about a robot who just wanted to protect her human, even if it meant things got messy. But honestly, I think the sequel went a little too far. It tried to be this big, action-packed sci-fi film, and it lost some of the charm that made the first one so great. It felt like it was trying to be something it wasn’t, and it just didn’t quite work for me.
Even though M3GAN was destroyed in the first movie, she was brought back to life when someone stole the code used to create her and built a new, military-grade robot with plans for an AI takeover. Surprisingly, the only one who could stop this new threat was M3GAN herself, and Gemma allowed her to act—with a few limitations.
M3GAN 2.0’s Streaming Success Could Revive the Franchise
I remember when the first M3GAN movie blew everyone away – it made over $181 million globally on just a $12 million budget! Naturally, Blumhouse and Universal immediately wanted a sequel, and even a more mature spinoff called SOULM8TE was in the works, originally slated for January 9, 2026. Unfortunately, that spinoff is currently on hold while the studio searches for a new distributor. But good news! With M3GAN 2.0 recently climbing back into the spotlight and doing really well on streaming, Blumhouse might not have to wait long to find someone to pick it up.
Despite not making a profit in theaters, M3GAN 2.0 is still popular on streaming services, suggesting there’s continued interest in the character and potential for future installments. While critics weren’t impressed – giving it a 57% rating and a ‘rotten’ label – audiences loved the sequel, awarding it an 81% approval rating, which is even higher than the 78% the first M3GAN film received.
M3GAN 2.0 is streaming on Netflix.
