Lynne McGranger confesses she was ‘terrified’ to join the cast of Home and Away after bidding farewell to the iconic soap
Lynne McGranger has admitted that she was terrified to join the cast of Home and Away.
The well-loved actress, aged 72, who portrays the beloved character Irene Roberts on the legendary Seven soap opera, recently announced that she is leaving Summer Bay. Her final episodes are scheduled to be broadcast in the upcoming month.
Contemplating her memorable character obtained a few years before her 40th birthday, Lynne shared that, being a theater veteran, she was unsure about her abilities to adapt on television.
‘I was terrified because of my age,’ she told The Australian Women’s Weekly.
It seemed as though they thought I had everything under control, but in reality, I was quite clueless since my experience was primarily limited to theater.

Lynne mentioned that she discovered her rhythm during the show by observing more seasoned actors like Judy Nunn (Ailsa Stewart), a suggestion given by the program’s directors.
She suggested, “You should observe and imitate the elders to learn effectively. This method will help ensure your success and longevity.
If people dislike your personality, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s better for them to have strong feelings either way, rather than feeling indifferent or uncertain about you.
Lynne confessed that as she bids farewell to Summer Bay, having been there for nearly 33 years, it isn’t always easy for her to differentiate reality from fiction, given her lengthy portrayal of the character Irene.
For quite some time now, it’s become difficult to distinguish between Lynne and Irene,” she pointed out, implying their identities seem to overlap.
As a performer, any private matters concerning Irene are confined to the film set. I find it astounding that some actors can maintain their roles for extended periods; it would undoubtedly prove challenging and distracting for me.
During a promotional clip for her last appearances, Irene is visibly emotional as she’s comforted by John Palmer, portrayed by Shane Withington, following the revelation of her diagnosis.
‘I am so scared,’ she says, before admitting: ‘I might not have any good days left.’

As I step into view, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia, for this moment marks the close of an epoch. I am Justin Morgan, your trusted lifestyle guide, and it is with a heavy heart that I share this poignant realization with you all.
John later adds: ‘I don’t know how to say goodbye. I don’t have any words.’
Fans flocked to the comments to express their heartbreak after discovering Irene’s health battle.
One individual expressed, “I’m not quite at the point yet where I can bid farewell to Irene. She has always held a special place in my heart. Indeed, she was known for spreading joy and laughter among those around her.
Reflecting on it with a heavy heart, they’ve been part of my life like Irene and Home and Away. I believe John will feel the same sense of loss.
‘I’m not ready, going to need a big supply of tissues,’ a third wrote.
Last month, it came to light that Lynne had recorded her last scenes playing Irene on Home and Away. The show subsequently posted emotional moments from her farewell day at work.
As I bid farewell to Seven’s beloved series after three decades as a cherished member of the cast, I was deeply moved by the heartfelt gesture of my fellow actors, led by Ada Nicodemou, who presented me with beautiful bouquets of flowers. The emotions were intense, yet tinged with immense joy and gratitude, as I reflected on the incredible journey that brought us all together.

She declared, “I’ve just experienced the most thrilling journey. Each member of our team – Ray, Georgie, Emily, Shane, Ada, and James, as well as all the younger ones – I hold them all so dearly.
Lynne pointed out that the art department, the scriptwriters, and everyone else involved – there are countless unrecognized heroes behind the scenes. This production is a complex blend of various components,” she explained.
It’s truly a pleasure to have worked alongside all of you, an experience that has left me deeply moved and awestruck. Your talent and dedication never fail to impress me, and for that, I am incredibly grateful. A heartfelt thank you to each one of you.
This year’s 65th Awards nominee, who has been recognized for both a Silver and Gold Logie, previously shared her decision to leave the show earlier in the year.
In a poignant moment, after over three decades in a cherished position, working daily alongside individuals who I hold dear, regard with deep respect, and now consider as family, it’s both joyful and sad to be wrapping up this exceptional, longest-held chapter of my professional life, the esteemed actor shared at the time.
She expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards the exceptional production team and brilliant writers, who are always available to her, for their contributions to Irene’s life over the past nearly three decades.
I’m incredibly proud of the plot that will send Irene off from the Bay. Most importantly, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the fans for your unwavering affection and encouragement.
