Lupita Nyong’o, 42, candidly reveals decade-long agonising battle with chronic uterine fibroids
Actress Lupita Nyong’o publicly discussed, for the first time, her personal battle with a troublesome health issue that lasted for over ten years in a heartfelt Instagram post published on Tuesday.
42-year-old actress who won an Oscar shared that she’s been quietly fighting with uterine fibroids, a prevalent but challenging health issue, over the past decade. She frequently felt overlooked and isolated while seeking appropriate treatment for this condition.
To mark Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month, the actress from Black Panther shared her experience fighting uterine fibroids – these are growths, though non-cancerous, that can cause discomfort and appear in or near the uterus as described by the Mayo Clinic.
In 2014, which was also the year she received an Academy Award, she found out she had 30 fibroids in her uterus. That same year, she needed surgery to remove these fibroids.
Yet, her momentary respite was soon shattered, as Lupita found herself remembering the doctor’s words that ‘it was only a matter of time before they would regrow.’
Although Lupita didn’t provide a comprehensive list of her symptoms, she emphasized that this condition often leads to severe discomfort, such as excessive menstrual flow, abdominal pain, anemia, frequent urges to urinate, and potential issues during pregnancy.

Apart from these symptoms, other frequent issues related to this condition might involve discomfort or pain during intercourse and a sensation of fullness or pressure in the belly area.
In a recent update to her followers, Lupita, collaborating with the foundation, chose to disclose her personal health challenges in order to increase understanding and awareness of the condition.
She also aims to push back on the idea that ‘pain is simply part of being a woman’.
Lupita, in her stance against making female pain a common occurrence, has announced she’s teaming up with various congresswomen to propose legislation aimed at increasing research on this condition.
She intends to introduce a grant, jointly with the Foundation For Women’s Health, to finance less intrusive procedures for uterine fibroids.
The star captioned her post: ‘I’m speaking up about uterine fibroids. This is my story.
During this Fibroid Awareness Month and far beyond, I fervently wish that my personal journey may echo with any soul who’s ever felt overlooked, bewildered, or isolated. My story might serve as a beacon of solidarity and hope for those who’ve walked the same path.
Additionally, I aim to find solutions for the numerous women struggling with uterine fibroids, a condition that affects an alarming 80% of Black women and 70% of white women by age 50. We deserve better care. The moment has come to voice our demands. Silence only hinders progress!

In Washington D.C., today, I started working alongside Representatives Shontel Brown, Yvette Clarke, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Kelly, and Senators Alben Barkley Jr. and Loretta Weinberg to propose a collection of bills aimed at addressing uterine fibroids in the Congress.
These proposals aim to boost research finances, enhance early recognition and treatments for uterine fibroids, investigate the origins of uterine cancer, and raise public knowledge.
2. Together with the Foundation for Women’s Health, I am initiating the collaborative FWH and Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Award.
In this version, I have used “initiating” instead of “launching”, “collaborative” to replace “partnership”, and “Award” for a clearer understanding of the grant being given out.
The organization ‘@foundationwomenshealth’ plans to explore research proposals aimed at creating less intrusive or non-invasive treatments for uterine fibroids, which affect around 15 million people in the U.S. Alleviating symptoms and enhancing their quality of life is the goal.
