Mark Hamill is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars film from 1978 – a humble farm boy who trains to become a Jedi and fights to free the galaxy. For almost 50 years, fans have often asked Hamill why Luke never married. The character is single when we see him again in The Last Jedi (2017), and Hamill says that question is frequently followed by speculation about Luke’s sexual orientation.
George Lucas, who created the original Star Wars films, didn’t focus much on Luke Skywalker’s love life. Because Lucas didn’t provide a clear story in that area, Mark Hamill recently told Polygon he believes it’s better to let fans imagine the details themselves.
So if you want him to be gay, he is. If you don’t want him to be, he’s not. It’s whatever you want.
I remember reading something Mark Hamill said a while back, and it really stuck with me. He’s been saying similar things for years, which is awesome. He explained that back in the day, fan mail was different. Now, people are writing in about really important stuff – being bullied, struggling with coming out. And they were asking him, ‘Could Luke Skywalker be gay?’ His answer was perfect. He said it’s totally up to how you interpret it. If you see Luke as gay, then absolutely he is, and you shouldn’t feel bad about that at all. He basically said to judge him as a person, not by who he loves, and I thought that was incredibly powerful.

While the original Star Wars trilogy does show some initial romantic interest between Luke and Princess Leia, it quickly shifts. Leia and Han Solo fall for each other in The Empire Strikes Back, and any possibility of a Luke and Leia romance is completely removed when Return of the Jedi reveals they are siblings.
Between the original Star Wars films and the start of the new trilogy in 2015, a series of books filled fans in on Luke Skywalker’s adventures after Return of the Jedi. In those stories, Luke marries Mara Jade, a former Imperial assassin who becomes his ally. While some characters from those books, like the villain Thrawn (played by Lars Mikkelsen), have appeared in Disney’s Star Wars TV shows and are expected to be in The Mandalorian and Grogu (coming to theaters May 22nd), Mara Jade wasn’t included. As a result, Luke’s romantic life isn’t directly addressed in the films.
Mark Hamill generally encourages fans to connect with Star Wars in whatever way feels meaningful to them. He notes the films are designed to be enduring and resonate across generations. In an interview with Polygon, Hamill explained that fans often tie the movies to personal memories – like coping with difficult life events or finding comfort during tough times. He finds it heartwarming to be part of something that holds such significance for people’s childhoods, and to see that connection passed down to their own children, creating a lasting, generational bond with the franchise.
