Luke Grimes Could Become Western Legend in Yellowstone Spinoff Y: Marshals

The first new series connected to the hit show Yellowstone will debut on CBS in early 2026. Called Y: Marshals, it stars Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. In this modern-day spinoff, Kayce has traded ranch life for a career as a U.S. Marshal, working to uphold the law in Montana.

Grimes appears to be taking inspiration from classic Western stars with his new show. Y: Marshals will be unique among the Yellowstone universe’s expanding lineup, as it’s the only series concentrating on the work of law enforcement, unlike shows like The Madison and The Dutton Ranch which focus on family drama. Historically, the U.S. Marshals have been a prominent feature in television Westerns.

James Arness and Timothy Olyphant are often considered the greatest Western TV actors ever, and both became famous playing U.S. Marshals. It seems Taylor Sheridan, the creator of both Yellowstone and Y: Marshals, intentionally connected his character Kayce Dutton to this strong legacy.

Kayce Dutton Becomes A U.S. Marshal In Yellowstone’s Spinoff Y: Marshals

The initial trailer for Y: Marshals suggests Monica Dutton Long may die, and it looks like Kayce is starting a new chapter. He’s transforming into a classic Western lawman focused on action and gunfights. The trailer shows actor Luke Grimes riding a horse and wearing a U.S. Marshal uniform.

Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son with Monica, will appear in the new series. However, Kayce’s approach to fatherhood might change significantly with his new job, especially considering everything he’s been through. He’s transformed from a dedicated and kind rancher fiercely devoted to his family into a more aggressive and independent law enforcement officer.

3 Of TV’s Greatest Western Characters Were U.S. Marshals

Kayce Dutton’s development now places him among the most memorable characters in Western television history. He’s following a path similar to those of three legendary figures in the genre. The most well-known example is Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke, who served as a U.S. Marshal in Dodge City, Kansas.

Timothy Olyphant has recently become known for portraying two highly respected lawmen who both served as U.S. Marshals. He’s particularly famous for his role as Raylan Givens in Justified, a seasoned marshal transferred from Miami to Eastern Kentucky.

Before taking on the role of Raylan Givens, Timothy Olyphant played Seth Bullock in the series Deadwood. Bullock was a former U.S. Marshal in Montana who later became the sheriff of the gold rush town, and his experience as a Marshal was what made him such a respected figure of the law on the show.

Luke Grimes Could Be The Next James Arness Or Timothy Olyphant

Timothy Olyphant has become a Western icon with memorable performances in shows like Justified and Deadwood. Similarly, James Arness is considered the defining TV Western star, largely due to his two decades playing U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon.

Luke Grimes is following a path similar to classic Western stars. He went from playing a supporting role on Yellowstone to leading the new show Y: Marshals. If the new series does well, he could become known as one of the great actors in TV Westerns, much like James Arness and Timothy Olyphant.
