Lucio as Dee Jay and Genji as Ken: The Overwatch 2 Street Fighter 6 skins that never made it
“Dee Jay as Lucio sounds awesome.”
In a surprising turn of events, Blizzard has unveiled all eight crossover skins for Overwatch 2 and Street Fighter 6, but some enthusiasts are expressing disappointment. The skin intended for Chun-Li was given to Juno instead of Mei, both of whom are of Chinese descent. Similarly, fans anticipated a Dee Jay skin for Lucio, but it did not materialize. In a recent conversation with the media, Dion Rogers, Overwatch 2’s art director, disclosed that the creative team had initially considered Ken as either Genji or Hanzo, but ultimately decided to pass on the idea.
Lucio as Dee Jay in Overwatch 2
When it was announced that Overwatch 2 and Street Fighter 6 would be collaborating, there was speculation among players and enthusiasts about whether Lucio might receive a Dee Jay-themed outfit, given their mutual affection for music.
Contrary to expectations, the announcement trailer and gameplay footage presented characters different from their usual roles. Ryu was portrayed as Hanzo, Chun-Li as Juno, Cammy as Widowmaker, Juri as Kiriko, Guile as Soldier: 76, M. Bison as Sigma, Blanka as Winston, and Dhalsim as Zenyatta in these trailers.
During an interview with ComicBook, Rogers admitted that at the moment, there’s no Dee Jay Lucio skin available. However, he did express some optimism about it. In his words, “Dee Jay as Lucio would be amazing! Rest assured, we’ll eventually make it happen – perhaps in the future.
Genji Ken and Ryu Hanzo as Overwatch 2 Street Fighter 6 skins
Additionally, Rogers mentioned that the Overwatch 2 team hadn’t developed any content around character Ken. He suggested that it could have been exciting to further develop him, perhaps by introducing a stylish new color scheme for Hanzo or delving deeper into Genji’s storyline instead.
In Overwatch 2, the characters Hanzo and Genji represent the Shimada brothers, who previously clashed against each other. This rivalry between them resembles the conflict between Ken and Ryu from the Street Fighter series. Interestingly, both sets of characters initially originated as a single character that was later divided into distinct heroes: Hanzo and Genji in Overwatch and Ken and Ryu in Street Fighter.
The common past between the Shimada siblings and their legendary rivalry, Ken vs Ryu, would have added depth to their collaboration, but it never materialized. Will there be a second round of the Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 crossover with fresh skins? Only future events can answer that question.
