A recent photo from Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter has given fans their first glimpse of the movie, but it might also hint at a major challenge the film faces. Starfighter has generated a lot of excitement since it was announced, especially because of director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and star Ryan Gosling. Details like the cast and early set photos have been released, building anticipation for the new installment in the Star Wars universe.
Disney recently shared the first official image from the set of the upcoming Star Wars movie, Starfighter, announcing that filming has begun. The photo shows Ryan Gosling and his co-star, Flynn Gray, sitting in a landspeeder, marking the first look at the new film.
Lucasfilm announced more actors joining the new film, including Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams. The cast list showed Shaquille Gray’s name right after Gosling’s, suggesting he’ll be featured prominently alongside the leading star.
Considering where Gray appears on the cast list and the fact that he and Gosling were the only actors featured in the first released photo, it’s likely their characters will be central to the film’s story. While this might not seem significant at first glance, it subtly suggests that the character from Starfighter could face a serious challenge.
Star Wars: Starfighter’s First Look Reveals Major Issue

If Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray truly take center stage in Starfighter, it would suggest Star Wars is repeating a familiar pattern: relying too much on having two main characters, something we’ve seen a lot lately in the franchise.
The photo suggests Ryan Gosling’s character will be a seasoned mentor and protector to Gray’s character, who appears to be new to the situation and in need of guidance. This mentor-protege dynamic is a common storyline.
When The Mandalorian premiered in 2019 and quickly gained a following among Star Wars fans, it started with a straightforward story: a hardened bounty hunter named Din Djarin discovered a vulnerable child, Grogu, and the series focused on the bond between them.
But Star Wars continued with The Bad Batch, which used a similar approach. The show centered on Clone Force 99 – a group of skilled soldiers – and their connection with a young, untrained child named Omega.
And that wasn’t the last time we saw this pairing. The 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi also brought them together, surprisingly featuring a young Princess Leia alongside the older Obi-Wan Kenobi.
While Skeleton Crew shares some similarities with these pairings in how Jude Law’s character interacts with the children, it’s not quite the same. That show focused on the relationships between all the younger characters, unlike the others which primarily centered on a single adult and a single child.
How Starfighter Can Break the Star Wars Mold

With Gray positioned just below Gosling in the cast and likely to be a central character, the story could follow familiar patterns seen in other recent Star Wars tales. However, the project, Starfighter, is already showing signs of taking a unique approach and differentiating itself from other Star Wars content.
For instance, the upcoming Starfighter project will be a standalone story, not connected to any existing Star Wars films or series. While interconnected projects have worked well for Star Wars in the past, many fans have expressed a desire to see fresh characters, settings, and time periods explored, and Starfighter aims to deliver exactly that.
Notably, the upcoming Starfighter movie is breaking from the usual Star Wars practice of casting relatively unknown actors. This film boasts a high-profile cast, including stars like Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams. Having so many well-known actors in one Star Wars film is a first, suggesting potential shifts within the galaxy far, far away.
The upcoming Starfighter film might not involve Ryan Gosling’s character mentoring a newcomer, Flynn Gray. It could avoid the common “found family” trope where two unrelated characters develop a father-son bond. If so, Starfighter would successfully differentiate itself from some familiar and overused storylines in recent Star Wars films.
